Windows Vista Home Basic is the operating system for homes with basic computing needs. It is easy to set up, it helps you use your PC more securely and reliably, and like all of the editions of Windows Vista, it is compatible with the widest range of software, devices, and services that you use and trust. If you simply want to use your PC for tasks such as surfing the Internet, corresponding with friends and family using e-mail, or performing basic document creation and editing tasks, then Windows Vista Home Basic will deliver a safer, more reliable, and more productive computing environment.

Safer and more reliable
Windows Vista is designed to be the safest operating system that Microsoft has ever delivered. Every edition of Windows Vista, including Windows Vista Home Basic, provides the essential tools and technologies to help protect you whether you are browsing the Internet, connecting to a wireless network, or just reading e-mail. All editions of Windows Vista include new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures long before you have lost any important personal data. Additionally, all Windows Vista editions will include new parental control features that will allow you to manage and monitor your family's use of games, the Internet, instant messaging, and other activities on your PC that might concern you as a parent. Windows Vista Home Basic is designed so that you and your family can focus on what's most important to you and spend less time worrying about your safety.

Easier to set up and use
As with all of other editions of Windows Vista, Windows Vista Home Basic makes your PC significantly easier to use. Windows Vista Home Basic has new tools to help you painlessly move your personal files and settings from your old PC to your new Windows Vista-based PC. Additionally, Windows Vista Home Basic integrates new search tools throughout the operating system to help you quickly find the precise file or program you need.

Windows Vista Home Basic contains all of the basic features to make your computing experience easier, safer, and more reliable. Even if your existing PC seems to be adequate for basic tasks such as reading e-mail and browsing the web, by upgrading your PC to Windows Vista Home Basic or by purchasing a new PC installed with Windows Vista Home Basic, you will benefit from a better computing experience and more peace of mind.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fairly basic offering of the latest operating system., 11 Jan 2008

There are four versions of Widows Vista available to the public:
* Home Basic
* Home Premium
* Business
* Ultimate
Each version offers a different set of options with ultimate offering all options and a little bit more.
This edition is Home Basic which is the most basic of the product suite; the nice new Aero interface is not available. This would make a good choice if your computer is not up to the requirements standard for the other editions but you wanted to get the latest security enhancements. It provides all your basic home computing needs if you only need to use your home pc for tasks like browsing the internet, word processing, using e-mail and viewing pictures then this could be the right version. The enhanced security features will help protect your system from unwanted intrusion.
One aspect to be aware of before upgrading to windows vista is some manufacturers have not released drivers for this platform yet, you should check with their websites before upgrading to vista to avoid disappointment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Basic Operating System, 21 Aug 2007
By Mr. W. Lockwood (Surrey, England) - See all my reviews

Arrived on time and in good condition.

I think there is only two choices for most of us either Vista Basic or Vista Premium. Here's a quick bit of advise.

Vista Basic requires 512Mb memory to run.
Some graphics effects are disabled and no Media Centre.
Good choice if your PC is lacking in performance.

Vista Premium requires 1Gb memory to run.
More advanced graphics effects are included on the desktop, it will slow down your machine a little but looks pretty.
Media Centre is included.
Best package to go for if your machine is decent.

So Vista Basic at the price I paid is excellant value, it was for an old machine so a good choice for me. Windows XP was £5 more so it's a no brainer.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't "upgrade" to this if you can possibly avoid, 16 Sep 2007
By Comical Engineer "comicaleng" (UK) - See all my reviews

Home basic - yes, it's basic. Lots of features found in other versions of Vista are disabled in this version - they're on the disc but you can't access them without an "upgrade". It will run in 512MB - cripplingly slowly if you have more than any 2 apps up at the same time. That is also without shared video RAM - of which Vista needs 128MB so you end up with only 384MB of system RAM available making the macine even slooooower. The sidebar interface is a gimmick at best, a waste of screen space at worst.

Vista has multiple driver problems. If you have any hardware over about 2 years old then it is very likely that there may not be a Vista driver available. The machine that I have just been asked to install this on now is almost useless except for running MS Office. The Epson Scanner, Brother Printer and Canon cameras won't talk to the machine at all and the HP printer only works in BW!

The security functions are prohibitive, often having to click on 5 - 6 check boxes to do simple tasks as Vista asks "Are you sure" followed by "warning!!!" followed by "are you really sure?" then "you can't do this because ..." followed by "warning!!!" followed by "are you sure" follwed by "OK, I might let you do it just this once". The new version of explorer is not very instinctive either.
