Microsoft Windows 7 Unleashed is the only book that gives IT professionals, serious power users, and true geeks exactly what they need: powerhouse tweaks, hacks, techniques, and insights that can't be found anywhere else. Top Windows expert Paul McFedries - one of PTG's most respected authors - dives deep into Windows 7, returning with the most powerful ways to handle everything from networking to administration, security to scripting. McFedries begins with advanced customization -- covering everything from startup/shutdown to the file system. You will learn new ways to tune Windows 7 performance; police Windows via Group Policies; tweak the Registry; make the most of Windows 7's management tools; and control Windows 7 from the command line. Next, McFedries presents thorough coverage of securing Windows 7, including chapters on web and email security, and hardening networks. You will learn better ways to troubleshoot devices, networks, and startup; add Macs to Windows networks; and much more. The book concludes with three chapters of indispensable scripting techniques for automating Windows administration. Important note: Microsoft Windows 7 In Depth and Microsoft Windows 7 Unleashed are radically different books, with differing markets. Microsoft Windows In Depth is for a broad spectrum of intermediate-level end users. Microsoft Windows 7 Unleashed is for IT pros and power users; it focuses on advanced technical coverage of topics such as Registry hacks.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good book., 16 Oct 2009
By A. Kwabula (UK) - See all my reviews

I found this book especially useful for those who really want to learn Scripting in windows 7. There is a lot of command line information in its pages. As the Author clearly states, you need to be a power user to appreciate this book. For instance you will find comprehensive information editing the Registry - well explained. You will not find things like Windows 7 deployment, Imagex, WIM. To me this was dissapointing but then this book was not aimed for that. Insteady you will find tones of optimisation hacks, things you may not find in most books. I do not know if there are many books that will give you that much information on Windows 7 scripting. Don't buy the book if you are not a power user as you may find it 'punishing'. Good book if you want to be a Windows 7 guru. This book has given me power on 'hidden' settings in Windows 7, the author is really experienced in Windows.

1.0 out of 5 stars Buy something else, 20 Nov 2009
By JH "jh27" (UK, Cheshire) - See all my reviews
My wife bought me this. I wish she hadn't. I have Unleashed XP, which is pretty good, Unleashed Vista, which isn't and now Unleashed 7 which maintains the downward trend.

I was waiting for you guys to produce some reviews before buying a W7 book but she went ahead and bought this, thinking she was doing the right thing as I already had two of them. Ah well.

You do realise that this book covers the Release Candidate and not what you're running on your pc? OK there is apparently an online updated version but you bought a book because you wanted, well, a book. If you want something online you'll Google the specific issue, sort the wheat from the chaff and get some good information.

The style is wearing. I find my eyes moving over the words but realise that my brain has disengaged because there is no content, just words. This is a text book, so less of the homilies, opinions and general empty chat please. Read the first two paragraphs of the Introduction for a flavour of what you are in for.

This is an author who takes exception (page 84) to having to click on "Start" to shut down and proceeds to provide you with a script to circumvent this "irritation". I've only read this objection in joke emails before but this is the general flavour. I just don't have the inclination to spend as much time as the author does "saving time" or getting upset over such trivial matters.

There is not enough attention drawn to "this is new / changed in W7". Whole chunks have been carried forward from the Unleashed Vista book. This is not a bad thing as I don't want to have to refer back to older books for things which are unchanged but, as I said, the Vista book is pretty poor. To be fair it's the publisher at fault there not the author.

You may have gathered by now that I'm not impressed. Don't buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Microsoft Windows 7 Unleashed, 16 Oct 2009
By Tami Brady "Whole Health Therapist" (Calgary, Canada) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
After the difficulties working with Vista, I was a bit wary about the newest version of Windows. I decided to do a bit more research before I started to think seriously about upgrades. My biggest concern was that this new version would be so different from what I'm used to that it would take time to relearn everything.

After reading Microsoft Windows 7 Unleashed, I was surprised to read about the user friendliness of Windows 7. It looks as though Microsoft has worked out the bugs from Vista and then added a lot more features. Of particular interest are the security, networking, and back up features.

Microsoft Windows 7 Unleashed is quite an extensive resource. The text is readable for the average person and contains a wealth of information about aspects that the average person wouldn't normally know about. Step by step instructions are also provided.
