Next, McFedries presents thorough coverage of securing Windows 7, including chapters on web and email security, and hardening networks. You will learn better ways to troubleshoot devices, networks, and startup; add Macs to Windows networks; and much more. The book concludes with three chapters of indispensable scripting techniques for automating Windows administration. 4.0 out of 5 stars A good book., 16 Oct 2009

I found this book especially useful for those who really want to learn Scripting in windows 7. There is a lot of command line information in its pages. As the Author clearly states, you need to be a power user to appreciate this book. For instance you will find comprehensive information editing the Registry - well explained. You will not find things like Windows 7 deployment, Imagex, WIM. To me this was dissapointing but then this book was not aimed for that. Insteady you will find tones of optimisation hacks, things you may not find in most books. I do not know if there are many books that will give you that much information on Windows 7 scripting. Don't buy the book if you are not a power user as you may find it 'punishing'. Good book if you want to be a Windows 7 guru. This book has given me power on 'hidden' settings in Windows 7, the author is really experienced in Windows.

5.0 out of 5 stars Microsoft Windows 7 Unleashed, 16 Oct 2009

After the difficulties working with Vista, I was a bit wary about the newest version of Windows. I decided to do a bit more research before I started to think seriously about upgrades. My biggest concern was that this new version would be so different from what I'm used to that it would take time to relearn everything.

After reading Microsoft Windows 7 Unleashed, I was surprised to read about the user friendliness of Windows 7. It looks as though Microsoft has worked out the bugs from Vista and then added a lot more features. Of particular interest are the security, networking, and back up features.

Microsoft Windows 7 Unleashed is quite an extensive resource. The text is readable for the average person and contains a wealth of information about aspects that the average person wouldn't normally know about. Step by step instructions are also provided.

3.0 out of 5 stars Could do better!, 28 Sep 2009
By Philip Chapman - See all my reviews

Having tried the UNLEASHED books before - I gave this a shot in lieu of the fact that there was no alternative at the time of purchase. I wish that I had saved my money and just used Microsoft Technet articles etc and waited for the Official Microsoft press book on the 70-680 MCTS (which is still not released at the time of writing). The book is fine if you want a general overview of the operating system but the author has too many opinions and assumptions about Microsoft technologies and I simply got fed up with reading these and therefore this now sits on a dusty shelf never to be referenced again. He obviously majors in registry edits and command line tools - which have very dangerous implications for most users and technicians. I would suggest that going straight into the registry would not be a Microsoft approved approach (even with your UNLEASHED manual in one hand). Might be handy in the future if I get a very wobbly table to fix in the lab. If you are going for the MCTS qualification - get the Microsoft MCTS 70-680 book when published and use Technet resources.
