5.0 out of 5 stars A must have 22 Aug 2012
Format:Paperback
The short, short version: A very good book arriving very late. If you have an implementation that uses Windows Server AppFabric (or AppFabric for short) then there is no reason what so ever for not getting this book. A definite 5 star!

AppFabric
Do you remember the days when we called it Dublin and was afraid that Microsoft would topple our whole livelihood as BizTalk developers? Well I do and remember embracing it.

No matter how you look at it AppFabric is a good product and it is free, as in no charge. I cannot really understand why it did not take-off as it should have. Maybe it just got lost in all the Azure hype.

The book
I would like to state that this book would really have improved the chances of it being used in enterprise applications. The book is just that good. ...but late. I wish I had this book in 2010 when I was trying to implement AppFabric and make it work like a "light and free version of BizTalk". Others, like Jon Flanders and the ever working Ron Jacobs.

The book is following the, now established, pattern of the cookbook series from Packt Publishing; a short introduction, a description on how to do something and the a "how it works". Sometimes they add a "there's more". I like this pattern a lot , however as I have pointed out before, you loose some overall continuity and each recipe can be a bit isolated.

The writing is very good and as always I feel that the authors are really knowledgeable about the subject and that they have worked hard to keep it simple. A definite plus in my opinion.

The book covers
* Installing Windows Server AppFabric
* Getting Started with AppFabric Caching
* Windows Server AppFabric Caching - Advanced Use Cases
* Windows Server AppFabric Hosting Fundamentals
* More Windows Server AppFabric Hosting Features
* Utilizing AppFabric Persistence
* Monitoring Windows Server AppFabric Deployment
* Scaling AppFabric Hosting, Monitoring, and Persistence
* Configuring Windows Server AppFabric Security

They pretty much cover everything even if you should really know something about WCF and WF to really have use for this book, but if you are looking for a way to host your WCF and WF-services I think you already do.

In conclusion
This book is very good if you already have some application(s) running on AppFabric or if you are considering hosting some existing services on AppFabric. If you do not then this book is of no use. To me it is a nostalgic trip on a very good product that I never got to use.

Once again: If you want to use, or have, AppFabric: Buy this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic reference 30 Aug 2012
By Mike Diiorio - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
If you are writing anything more than a basic web service that is hosted on IIS, I highly recommend gaining a firm understanding of Windows Server AppFabric. The recently released Windows Server AppFabric Cookbook is the perfect resource to kick-start the learning process for the uninitiated and act as the go-to reference guide for the experienced architect. The cookbook series of books from Packt Publishing are authored to provide "quick answers to common problems" and the AppFabric cookbook delivers on that promise. While I had some experience with AppFabric before I purchased the book, I discovered a number of scenarios and solutions that I have not encountered in my role as a consultant. All-in-all the book presents 60 scenarios that cover a wide range of topics including installation, configuration, monitoring and utilizing the many features of AppFabric.

While the installation guides and MSDN documentation do a fairly good job of covering the basic functions, I am most impressed with the code samples from the book. One of the reasons I will refer back to this book often is the emphasis that is placed on using PowerShell to manage an AppFabric environment. This is important for anyone working in a production environment as many system administrators will want installation, configuration and monitoring to be completely scripted. PowerShell scripting is an important technique when utilizing AppFabric in a Web Farm where multiple servers need to stay in sync. No one wants to log in to each individual server in a cluster and make the same change over and over again just hoping not to fat-finger the one setting that will bring the environment to a halt. Also, the book also makes judicious use of screen shots and code samples that complement the step by step instructions.

All-in-all, I think the authors did a great job covering such a broad topic and I highly recommend the book to anyone interested in Windows Server AppFabric.
5.0 out of 5 stars Practical guidance you need. 8 Oct 2012
By Steef-Jan - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Windows Server AppFabric or Microsoft AppFabric 1.1 for Windows Server is a new feature on top of IIS that plays an essential role when it comes to on-premise hosting for services (WF, WCF) and caching on Windows Server OS. It can be viewed as a part of the Microsoft Integration Stack together with BizTalk, SQL Server and Azure ServiceBus. Basically Windows Server AppFabric, BizTalk and SQL Server are a part of the On-premise integration middleware. For lightweight integration Windows Server AppFabric together with WF (Windows Workflow) and WCF (Windows Communication Foundation) can be a right fit within your enterprise without using the more scalable, robust BizTalk Server. I believe this book will tell you the complete story on how to use Windows Server AppFabric, how to set it up and how to create robust, and state-of-the-art solutions on it. This from a practical standpoint, which is very valuable for me and others I believe. If you are planning or considering using this technology for a certain solution that I definitely recommend this book.
5.0 out of 5 stars Addressing the five W's of AppFabric - A Problem, Solution Approach 26 Sep 2012
By Adnan Masood - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Windows Server AppFabric is a comprehensive set of integrated technologies to build caching, hosting and monitoring solutions on Microsoft platform. Providing the breadth of this technology, it is hard for most texts to cover the scope of AppFabric, not only theoretically but also while providing concrete guidelines for everyday developer and architect.

For full disclosure, I am one of the technical reviewers of this book who has been working on AppFabric implementation in production environments for a while; So far I have found Microsoft Windows Server AppFabric Cookbook to be the unsurpassed, most comprehensive book available in the market to fill the information void surrounding this amazingly powerful distributed communication technology.

From getting started assistance to remote registry gotchas and E2E activity ID tracing, Microsoft Windows Server AppFabric Cookbook remains true to its goal of providing practical, real-world guidance for making the most of the capabilities offered by Windows Server AppFabric and AppFabric 1.1 for Windows Server based. Due to its technical depth, practicality and no-nonsense approach, I enjoyed reviewing this book as much as the authors enjoyed writing it. This 400 page book is written in a cookbook manner providing 60 code centric recipes ranging from setting up the environment, distributed cache, high availability, session management, hosting, persistence, deployment, health monitoring and security. Instead of exhausting reams with code listings, Microsoft Windows Server AppFabric Cookbook keeps illustrations and code segments quite precise. A typical recipe constitutes of salient headlines like getting ready (setup), how to do it (mechanics), how it works (execution), there's more (additional features) and see also (references) providing enough concrete details for a developer to accomplish her task with much better understanding and knowledge than an MSDN lookup may provide.

This book is an essential desk reference for anyone using or is interested in using Windows Server AppFabric.
