A. Express Upgrade to Windows Vista is available to end users from October 26, 2006 through March 15, 2007.
Q. What is the final date for end user customers to redeem the upgrade offer?
A. The offer must be redeemed by March 31, 2007.
Q. What is the Express Upgrade to Windows Vista?
A. By purchasing a qualifying PC running genuine Microsoft Windows XP Professional Edition, Windows XP Media Center Edition, or Windows XP Tablet PC Edition, end users can upgrade to a comparable version of Windows Vista and pay only a nominal cost, including shipping and handling. Customers purchasing genuine Windows XP Home Edition can upgrade for an additional fee.
Q. What are the system requirements for Windows Vista?
A. System requirements for Windows Vista include at least the following:
1. A modern processor (at least 800MHz1).
2. 512 MB of system memory.
3. A graphics processor that is DirectX 9 capable.
Not all Windows Vista features will be available for use on all PCs meeting minimum Windows Vista system requirements. All PCs meeting minimum system requirements upgraded to Windows Vista will be able to run the core experiences of Windows Vista, such as innovations in organizing and finding information, security, and reliability. Some features available in premium editions of Windows Vista—like the new Windows Aero user interface—require advanced or additional hardware.
How can system builders execute this offer?
1. Build PCs that meet at least the minimum system requirements for Windows Vista. PCs that run Windows XP and meet the Windows Vista system requirements are eligible. These include at least the following:
2. Run the Upgrade Advisor tool. This will allow system builders to print out a certificate showing that the PC being sold to the end user is capable of running the version of Windows Vista they will receive upon upgrading.
3. Order the Windows XP Express Upgrade SKUs from the distributor and install them on the qualified machines. These include redemption forms to provide to end users allowing them to upgrade to the appropriate edition of Windows Vista.
4. Provide redemption forms with qualified machines allowing them to upgrade from Windows XP to Windows Vista. System builders must agree to only ship the redemption form(s) with machines that meet Windows Vista minimum system requirements, and support the machines after the end user upgrades to Windows Vista, including providing updated drivers, etc.
Q. Which versions of Windows Vista will customers receive?
A. The upgrade version depends on the edition of Windows XP originally purchased. Customers receive the best value when they purchase Windows XP Media Center Edition, Windows XP Professional, or Windows XP Tablet PC Edition, allowing them to upgrade to the corresponding version of Windows Vista while paying only shipping and handling costs.

Q. What if I decide to offer an upgrade to a premium edition of Windows Vista for a PC that does not meet the system requirements for premium versions of Windows Vista?
A. To help ensure customers have the correct expectations regarding their PCs’ ability to run the Windows Vista edition your offer applies to, you are responsible for ensuring that all systems sold with the Express Upgrade to Windows Vista will support the applicable upgrade, as follows:
While all qualifying PCs must meet the minimum system requirements set out in the link below, for any qualifying PC for which you offer an Express Upgrade to a premium edition of Windows Vista—in other words, Windows Vista Home Premium, Windows Vista Business Edition, or Windows Vista Ultimate—Microsoft strongly recommends that the PC meet the system requirements for a Premium Ready PC.
If you offer an upgrade to a premium edition of Windows Vista for a PC that meets minimum system requirements but does not meet the system requirements for the version of Windows Vista you are including with the machine, which is not recommended, you must make clear and conspicuous disclosures in your marketing materials that the PC will not run all the features of the applicable premium edition of Windows Vista. If appropriate, you may also provide a URL where the customer can obtain additional information.
Q. Can I ship Express Upgrade to Windows Vista redemption forms with any PC?
A. By opening the box containing the redemption form, you agree to only install the software on a system that meets the Windows Vista system requirements, and also agree to support the system after the upgrade.
Q. Can the upgrade be installed on a PC other than the one on which the Express Upgrade version of Windows XP was installed? For example, may the user have Windows XP preinstalled on a machine using the Express Upgrade SKU and install the upgrade to Windows Vista on a second PC that does not have Windows yet?
A. No. The license is for upgrading the same PC. It is not an additional license.
Q. How will customers know which PCs are eligible for the Express Upgrade offer?
A. System builders like you will advertise the promotion and will advise customers as to which PCs are eligable
Q. What languages will the Express Upgrade to Windows Vista be available in?
A. The Express Upgrade to Windows Vista will be available in the following languages:
Arabic*, Brazilian Portuguese*, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Greek*, Hebrew*, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Simplified/ Traditional Chinese, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish*
