I was a bit sceptical of buying a tablet for the money this cost, but I am glad I did!

I was using the folks Kindle fire, and their Google Nexus tablet, and they were quite good, but I couldn't get on with them. I find Ice Cream Sandwich a bit clunky these days, multitasking hasn't really been tackled properly on iOS and Android (or hasn't been revisited for a fair while).

This Surface has come out and tackled my Gras with multitasking, instead of double tapping on a button or being forced to reopen an application from the window to resume, you simply swipe in from the left, it is so intuitive! Also, I never knew how to actually close apps properly on those devices, with this, again it is easy, simply swipe from the t all the way to the bottom, and it is gone.

One thing that I didn't read about before buying, and really was the icing on the cake, was you can have two applications open side by side, so you can have twitter, Facebook, messaging or anything else in a 5th of the space, and watch Player, 4od, lovefilm etc. With the rest of the space. Something I have wanted on a phone/tablet since Windows 7 was released.

The more you use this, the more you grow to respect the fine details, and understand Microsofts mentality.

The app store holds nearly 300k of apps now and is fast growing, it will be competing with iOS and Android in just a few months.

I've been toying with the idea of getting a tablet for about 12 months. My husband has an original iPad, my mum has the 'new' iPad (i.e iPad3) and my best friend has the iPadMini, so I'm well aware of what Apple have to offer. You may be wondering why you would buy a MS tablet for a price that is very similar to what Apple charge for a similar product. Apple make great items, don't get me wrong. I'm not anti-Apple. In fact I don't care who makes what, I just want the best product for me. My desktop at home is an iMac and my phone a Galaxy (Android) S2 so I'm not dead-set against using one or the other brand of product, so hopefully you will read this as an unbiased review.

I wanted a tablet that I could use like a laptop when needed. I don't want to lug a proper laptop, even a notebook, around with me, but I want the flexibility of having one. Sure, you can buy a keyboard add on for the iPad but it's cumbersome and doesn't turn it into something that feels like a laptop.
Secondly, i wanted to be able to work from home or on the go on it if needed. I hot desk at work and often have to go to the office off-shift, when someone else is on 'my' computer. For this reason I needed something that could work MS office competently so I could do my excel documents etc. The compatibility of the iPad just doesn't match the surface in this regard.

The surface has two interfaces essentially - the tablet Windows (8) RT which is touchscreen and seamless (comes with a music player, photo app for the camera, internet explorer, store for buying apps etc), plus the normal, familiar desktop interface (still touchscreen of course, just more familiar). This really makes you feel like you've got the best of both worlds.

I use my surface with a touch cover.

The Microsoft Surface tablet has one feature that (for me anyway) puts it far above all the others including Apple. I don't mean the cool Live Tiles or the USB port that takes everything from a mouse to a printer, or the slot for extra memory ... up to 34 gigs, no for me the best thing is that underneath the standard Tablet interface (with all it's apps) is a standard Windows Desktop. I can't run programs from there (except Office of course) but I can run the normal version of Internet Explorer, I can drag and drop pics, videos, movies, documents etc., into my good old 'my documents' file. You want to put a movie on Surface. Copy to a memory stick, plug into the USB port and drag it over! It also has the normal ability use any pic I want as Desktop and even access to the normal Control Panel where I can change many of the same settings as on my PC. I can even 'hide' files or pics and set the system to 'show hidden files' when I want. The point I am making here is that Surface is the most versatile and easy to use Tablet there is. Of course if you only want to run apps then the Apple is ok. If you know little about PC's and just use them for the internet or looking at pics, then what I like about Surface is probably meaningless, and you will be happy with another tablet I'm sure. My partner has the ipad and she used to love it ... before I got my Surface. Now she resents how easily I move stuff to and from my Tablet, and the cool Live Tiles look. She has to use 'itunes' to move stuff which she hates. Anyway, this of course is just my personal opinion, not gonna change anyone's mind. Buy what's right for you!
