I was in PC World looking for a tablet so I could browse the internet and watch films when travelling on the train and whilst lying in bed. A quick play with this and I was hooked. I'm going to sell my laptop and keep this as my only PC. I use my PC 90% of the time for browsing the web and watching films. I also have to do my own accounts as a contractor so need a full version of office. This is the only single device the fulfils those needs.

The build and screen quality is excellent. It would be good if it had one more USB port as I have my wireless mouse permanently attached which means I can't attach anything else. However there are ways around this like buying the docking station.

Love the backlit type keyboard, really easy to use on a table or on your lap.

Really pleased I bought this, this along with my Nokia 925 is all I need to immerse me into the online world. Highly recommended

-------- Update - After 2 weeks with surface --------

It's a great PC and a great tablet, but not such a great laptop

PC - I have this connected to a 24 inch monitor as I type this. The USB port is connected to a hub (see other reviews) and connected to the hub is a full size keyboard. a memory stick and my Nokia 925 phone. The memory stick I use to backup the odd file that I don't want on Skydrive. The rest of my files are backed up on the skydrive and synced with local copies. The phone app is open on the surface screen and my main desktop is on the 24 inch monitor. This is a superb setup using metro apps on the smaller screen and desktop apps on the main monitor.

Tablet - IE for the tablet is great for browsing and all the apps I use are available. Facebook, Twitter, Rightmove etc.... Also playing Halo is great fun.

**I HAVE UPDATED THIS REVIEW WITH A COMMENT REGARDING SURFACE PRO 3**

I got this 2 weeks after it was released last year. I was against purchasing laptops, but wanted something to help with my studies. I am a Physics student, so we do a lot of math work with a lot of letters from the Greek alphabet. It's much easier to draw these letters than to type them, so I began looking for a touchscreen laptop with a stylus.

After looking at a few different products, I decided I wanted something with a detachable screen so that the keyboard wouldn't get in the way, the stylus had to work well, and palm rejection was a must to allow natural handwriting. I eventually narrowed it down to this, which had just been released, and it seemed like the perfect timing. This was everything I was looking for, just at the time I wanted it.

Looking at the selection of covers, I immediately ruled out the first-gen Touch Cover. Many keystrokes would not register on this cover, so it wasn't really suitable for use. They improved a lot with their Touch Cover 2, but I had to go with the Type Cover 2. I'm pretty good at touch typing, and I can do it quite fast. It was important to me that I was able to continue touch typing with the Surface - Type Cover 2 allows this, mainly because of the feedback you get from physical keys, and the spacing is good for me. I'm very particular with my keyboards.

The Type Cover 2 is so thin that you don't expect much key travel, but after you try one out, you will be pleasantly surprised. The keys move a fair amount, and provide a great typing experience. The keyboard attaches magnetically to the bottom of the Surface, and the connection is very strong.

Verified Purchase
I had researched the product thoroughly and am delighted with it. I take it everywhere, it is light enough for me to put in my handbag, and I am writing this review in a café while enjoying my coffee. I don't find I need a keyboard, although others might. I enjoy using the pen especially in one note for free flowing notes. It is very clear that the office suite is a month's trial, so bear that in mind, personally I think having to renew office 360 every year could turn out a little pricey.

Got one of these direct and I really am genuinely astounded by it.

You really can use one of these as a full replacement for Desktop/Laptop/Tablet for 99% of computing tasks.

The build quality is pretty excellent, but I have noticed that after a months intensive use that the paint on the magnesium case is starting to scrape away slightly at the edges. So if your buying one used, check the corners for an indication of how well its been treated.

As this little monster runs the full Windows 8 OS it can do everything a normal windows desktop/laptop can.

That said the app store for windows is getting better and better, there are still some high profile apps that have yet to make an appearance, but the list is shrinking and as you can run the full existing windows library, you have a fully fledged web browser! including Adobe Flash support.

The i5 has plenty of grunt even for high res image/video editing, though it's not too impressed if you throw full PC games at it, it can do it but don't expect maximum settings.

If you push it with full desktop programs such as Photoshop or Games (SC2, Skyrim etc) it will also guzzle its battery in around 4 hours.
(It is a mid range laptop stuffed into a tablet after all)

If battery life is a concern for working, consider the cheaper RT instead, it still runs Office same as its bigger brother!

There is a Keyboard cover coming soon with an extra battery inside it, which will double the endurance.
