Book Description

All medium to large companies have to deal with data being stored in a number of databases, spreadsheets and proprietary applications. Bringing all this data together into one system can be useful to analyzing the business; but can also be quite difficult to do. Integration Services is the next big bet in Microsoft's business intelligence lineup, providing you with true enterprise extract transform and load features (ETL).

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Integration Services concentrates on providing you with real world solutions to real world problems, giving you a head start on various projects. If you are only evaluating Integration Services, you'll be able to focus on the early chapters with the option of drilling down into details in the later chapters where some of the more complex concepts will be discussed in detail. The interesting sidebars peppered throughout the book provide insight into the processes, people and decisions that yielded the final IS product.

2.0 out of 5 stars Who is this book for? 9 May 2007
Format:Paperback
I'm an IT pro with 10 years experience using MS products with SQL being one of them for at least 7 of those.

I've been involved in MS BI for nearly 3 years (analysis services, reporting services).

I work in an enterprise environment and with no experience in SSIS needed to hit the ground running (hideous phrase).

I bought this book based on the pedigree of the authors.

It has been of little use. Virtually every topic I look up has little or no content. Global error handling strategy? nothing. Debugging? very little. Troubleshooting common issues? nothing. Google groups has more to offer.

I am not sure who this book is aimed at. I cannot imagine the complete beginner will be comfortable with it, maybe it's a DBA book, who can tell.

When you compare this to a book such as 'hitchhikers guide to reporting services' in terms of usefulness, this falls way short.

For the price I paid I feel seriously ripped off.

3.0 out of 5 stars Average 9 May 2007
Format:Paperback
Although Kirk Haselden does know the subject of Integration Services well, he has presented the information to the reader in a manner whereby a lot of reading is required in order to find out how to achieve something which could have been explained simply with a good example.

The layout and format of this book can be improved upon.

Also they suggest a CD is supplied with the book, which it isn't. SAMS website is also supposed to host the code for download, I haven't managed to find it yet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good for reference and learning 2 April 2007
By Spanner
Format:Paperback
I bought this book after finding lots of useful articles on Kirk Haselden's SSIS blog and his book is just as helpful. Its answered a lot of my SSIS questions so far, and there's still lots of it I haven't even looked at.

It has an excellent chapter on migrating from DTS, and while it doesn't go into huge detail on every topic, it has just enough information on other aspects of SSIS to point you in the right direction. Having said that, there are some really useful tips that I haven't seen anywhere else.

There are some good examples to work through and it's relaxed written style makes it a less demanding read than other books on the subject that I've tried. I'd definitely recommend it for anyone who's just started working with SSIS.
