Product Description

Product Description

This is a focused guide to SQL Server 2000 for experienced SQL Server administrators and developers. Rahul Sharma focuses on helping professionals take advantage of the powerful new features built into SQL Server 2000 -- and on providing real-world solutions, scripts, and utilities that can dramatically improve your effectiveness. Sharma begins with an overview of SQL Server 2000 focused on its compelling new features for both OLTP and OLAP applications. He reviews major enhancements to SQL Server 2000, including XML support, tight Web integration, indexed views, distributed partitioned views, user-defined functions, and more. Next, he moves on to advanced SQL Server 2000 database administration, including the use of SQL-DMO object models, database consistency checks, optimization techniques, and the latest bug fixes. The book includes a detailed comparison with Oracle 9i, as well as specific guidance for database professionals migrating to SQL Server or planning to use both databases in tandem. An extensive library of powerful scripts and utilities for SQL Server administration is presented in the book and on the accompanying CD-ROM. Sharma concludes with a preview of SQL Server.N ET, and the evolving role of databases in the .NET era. For all SQL Server database administrators, developers, and managers, and for others who depend upon SQL Server databases, including Web and e-Business professionals.

From the Back Cover

Microsoft's SQL Server™ 2000 promises performance, scalability, and speed. Microsoft SQL Server™ 2000: A Guide to Enhancements and New Features shows database administrators and developers how to deliver on these promises. This book illustrates all the significant enhancements and additions in SQL Server 2000 and shows how they can be used most effectively. Readers learn by example how to use security features, replication, backup procedures, and data warehousing and optimization techniques.

Beginning with an overview of SQL Server 2000, this book discusses online transaction processing (OLTP) and online analytical processing (OLAP), features a tour of different SQL Server releases, and offers a guide to installation. The author describes and demonstrates the changes since SQL Server 7.0, thoroughly exploring SQL Server 2000's capacity as a Web-enabled database server. Readers are then immersed in advanced database administration topics such as performance optimization and debugging techniques.

Microsoft SQL Server™ 2000 also serves as a resource for those new to SQL Server, providing a basic introduction and details about how to make a conversion work, as well as a feature-by-feature comparison to Oracle 9i. Database administrators will find a collection of clearly explained scripts and utilities to simplify day-to-day tasks. This book concludes with a discussion of how SQL Server fits into the .NET environment and what to expect of the next release.

Sample code is used extensively to illustrate feature sets and illuminate topics covered. The accompanying CD includes this sample code as well as scripts and utilities. Rahul Sharma also shares his tips for optimizing applications' performance with adjustments to code, settings, and hardware. He alerts readers to common errors and fixes, and provides a checklist to guide readers through the installation and verification of the database server's stability. Rahul has translated his experience into knowledge and ready-to-use tools that database administrators and developers need to realize the many benefits of moving to SQL Server 2000.

Very Good Book--Concise and to the point 28 Mar 2002
By Jack Nicklaus - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
An excellent resource. Our company has been working with SQL 6.5 and SQL 7.0 for the last couple of years and we have been thinking about migrating to SQL 2000. I was looking for a book that covers just the new stuff and enhancements rather than the basics which I am already familiar with.

Also, I found the Chapters on Advanced DBA topics and the maintenance scripts especially the procedure for calculating the size of the database to be very useful. We have also been toying with the idea of supporting Oracle. Won't happen anytime soon but whenever that does happen, the chapters on the comparison of features will definitely help.

Overall a great resource. Very good and comprehensive coverage. I will strongly recommend it.

Copied content? 26 Sep 2005
By Deepak Shenoy - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
According to the following sources, nearly all the content is copied from other people's work, and is presented as the author's own.

It seems that there's been no permission sought for reproduction, and there's no credit given to the original authors. As the links above show, the original authors are quite unhappy. (Hey, I would be!) Mr. Sharma has not responded anywhere or refuted these claims.

I DO NOT RECOMMEND this book. Don't get ripped off!

Extensive coverage on new features 26 Sep 2005
By Doug - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
A very nicely written book which covers most of the new (now old:-)) features on SQL 2000. This helped me in moving from MySQL to SQL 2000 and I plan to move my database instances to SQL 2005 now.
