Product Description

Product Description

Microsoft Operations Manager 2005 Field Guide is a quick reference for resolving problems that intermediate-to-advanced MOM administrators are likely to face. Authors Andy Dominey and Garry Meaburn have experience with both deploying and troubleshooting MOM in large-scale environments, and the problems and solutions they discuss are ones they have actually faced in their careers.

This book is ideal if you're already familiar with MOM, but are not yet an expert at administering it. All of the solutions and troubleshooting tips get right to the point. Furthermore, the chapters are stand-alone and can be read in any order you choose. This is a book for those who measure twice before they cut--and for those who didn't but wish they had.

About the Author

Andy Dominey is a Microsoft MVP and currently works in the UK as a MOM/infrastructure consultant. He has been responsible for the IT systems of many large-scale customers including the British Army and a company supplying mobile phone services to major UK mobile operators. Andy currently contributes MOM solutions to myITforum.com and the Microsoft MOM community. Andy has been in the IT industry for about seven years. He started out as a field service and support engineer, and then worked his way up to systems administrator responsible for MOM, AD, Exchange, web hosting, and SAN and clustering for an Exchange hosting provider based in the UK.

Not bad.... 19 Dec 2007
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Well after working recently with one of the authors, the book is your 'Next Stage' kind of book (got the book first).

Do not think that after reading this book you will be a master of MOM 2005, no way. MOM can be as easy or as difficult as you want it to be.

What this book does offer is some quick wins to problems that other books do not cover.

I'm afraid there isn't much else out there that does cover the extreme sides of MOM. If you want scripts, then get VBScript books, convert to MOM (ScriptContext) and enjoy.

As for in-depth Management Pack tuning then good luck.

So as for this book? After you have installed MOM and need something else and you're on your own, then this book is for you.

Failing that, there is always Google and user forums.

Great Book! 7 Mar 2007
By Joseph Topjian - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Everything about MOM is covered in the book (at least it seems that way -- I'm not a MOM expert by far). Capacity planning, installation, management packs, alerts, and reports are all topics that are covered. It's packed with diagrams and screenshots -- and that's always a good thing for a GUI-centric application. The diagrams are especially helpful when describing the different MOM architectures. Speaking about architecture, a good amount of the book is devoted to MOM design, both in the beginning with initial installation planning, and towards the end with management groups.

The introduction section says that this book is geared toward people who are already using MOM. I think if you're new to MOM and need a quick course on how to use it, MOM 2005 Field Guide will do just fine.
