From the start, the book logically goes through what SharePoint is, the differences between the old version and the new one and also the differences between the present versions of Windows SharePoint Services (WSS), Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) Standard and MOSS Enterprise. Also included throughout the book are interesting tidbits from Microsoft and their implementation as well as other good real-world experiences.

Whilst heavily focused on designing and planning, it emphasises the importance on this aspect, whereas other books go straight in to the installation and usage. The second and third sections - "Building" and "Deploying" are full of other useful content, whereas the final section "Operating" is left open to the end user's interpretation and less than 100 pages.

Albeit entitled "Best Practices" this book takes in to account all of the major aspects required to ensure a successful deployment of any SharePoint implementation - focusing more heavily on the importance setting a proper foundation by setting requirements and "getting all your ducks in a row" rather than just installing and giving advice without first thinking.

A definite addition to your SharePoint collection.

good but..... 21 Sep 2011

I have more than six years in SharePoint but after reading this book I realized it does not carry all the best practices, why talk more about basic installation and confgurations when you are to give best practices. I was personally looking more best practices toward security configurations, search settings, front-end to SQL setup for good enough handle of user requests on large farms. A lot of stuff is missing but if you are starting up and you have done the beginner level stuff then go for this book it will be good for you.

An excellent well structured book that provides a tremendous amount of useful and relevant information regarding the lifecycle of planning and deploying a SharePoint 2007 environment.

This book should be a mandatory read for anyone considering or about to start a SharePoint implementation or deployment.

It highlights and covers many of the areas that will have a significant impact on whether a SharePoint deployment is regarded as a success or not.
Not only covers technical aspects but also covers business areas such as Business Requirements Definition, Governance, Service Levels , Development of information architectures, Operating aspects such as Backup and Recovery, Capacity Planning and Performance.

Many people may not consider these before embarking on a SharePoint project/deployment but with this book they will avoid many potential costly mistakes.

The "notes from field" and "lessons learnt" at appropriate points provide valuable insight into actual real world information and implementations.

The book assumes the reader has some knowledge and understanding of SharePoint and it lives to its name of providing Best Practices. The reader can be selective on the sections to read if required.

The book provides a lot of excellent and useful information to the reader to assist them in reaching decisions regarding design and deployment of an appropriate SharePoint environment.

An invaluable asset for anyone working with this software.
