As a student currently in Year 11 in the UK, Microsoft Office is a very important part of my software suite. It is used everywhere, and in every subject, from ICT (obviously), right through to PE and Music, and if you don't have it, or a decent alternative at home, you are majorly disadvantaged. As school I am used to using Office 2007, and have no major qualms with it as such. However, the design in general seemed a bit bulky. I have used 2007 since the beta, but the final version still seemed a bit too much like a prototype, in that only 4 of the programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access) featured the new Fluent UI, or 'Ribbon'. To my mind, a software suite such as Office should stick to a single uniform design, and its features should run concurrently throughout programs. In Publisher 2007, the classic WordArt was still in place, for example.

Office 2010, however, completely answers all of my little niggles I had in the suite. A clear, simplified and customisable user interface throughout ALL programs, a far superior File tab/backstage view to 2007's Office Menu, and host of useful add-ons and enhancements that allows you to get the most out of your time and creativity, and all the while keeping the programs working with each other in a way that 2007 just didn't. I won't go into much detail about the new features, there are plenty of reviews on the site that do that.

So all-in-all, the suite deserves the 5-star rating I have given it. However, my praise does not extend to its price tag.

The pricing scheme is illogical at best:
Home and Student: 4 programs: £109.99
Home and Business: 5 programs: £239.99
Professional: 7 programs: £429.

5.0 out of 5 stars Office 2010 23 Oct 2010
This is a fantastic product for a fantastic price! Here in the Czech Republic it is 50% more expensive than on Amazon. Up till now I've been using MS Office 2007 Basic OEM which was also great, but this new version is a nice upgrade, beacause it finally unifies the user interface of all Office products (most important for me is that Outlook, which I use every day, has improved performance, ribbon and is much easier to set up). I would compare the difference between Office 2007 and Office 2010 to the differece between Windows Vista and Windows 7. Office 2010 is almost the same as 2007 in functionality it offers, but it's much faster, looks better than previous version and adds some nice new features. Retail version has also great advantage because you can legally install it on 2 PCs - your laptop and your desktop PC. If you have the Office 2007 and you are satisfied with it, there's no need to upgrade to 2010. If you have some older version (or even Office 2007 OEM and you plan to buy a new PC) this Office 2010 Professional is really worth the price.

3.0 out of 5 stars Its good, but not 'Upgrade' good 27 May 2010
REVIEW SUMMARY - If my review was tl:dr for you, this will give you a quick summary
Office 2007 is pretty perfect for my needs, its simple to use with the ribbon interface,
has all the excellent programs a home/student user would need and is quite cheap these days.

Office 2010 is a very minor upgrade, everything remains in the same place mostly, there are
minor additions to the programs such as in Word, you have more picture options, and in Excel
can make graphs inside cells. But for the price, it is not really a worthwhile upgrade if you
are working well with Office 2007. My advice would be to avoid this until an inevitable price drop.

Office 2010 does start up a bit quicker, but only by a second if that. That being said,
on a powerful PC it is nice to see your blank document open up almost immediatley. For the
majority though, the difference will be non-existent, or will not amount to anything useful.

Appearance is almost identical to Office 2007. Classic ribbon interface above. However, the
Office 'Orb' button has been replaced with the old File menu. This now provides a list to your
left with all the common tasks of opening, saving, sending, printing, and recent documents.

5.0 out of 5 stars MS Office 2010 Professional 9 Jun 2010
Had this a couple of days - much impressed about how simple the installation is - it only asks for the key code and it's away..
On the surface, it doesn't seem radically different from Office 2007, although I'm pleased to see the Orb replaced by slightly more conventional tabs.
The acid test has been last night's homework for my 8-year old, and I'm glad to say she took to it like a duck to water and produced an essay complete with pictures with no help at all - Microsoft must be getting something right.
I like it.
