Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Microsoft Office is even more predominant on the Mac than on the PC, with Excel and Word being the most widely used spreadsheet and word processor. OfficeX is therefore a most important software release for Apple's new operating system, OS X. The suite consists of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Entourage, an e-mail client and "digital asistant" organiser app. Although Office X is a carbonised adaptation of Office 2001, the programmers have really pulled out all the stops for this new release, both in terms of how it looks, and user experience. In design terms, it's hard to see where the beautiful Aqua interface of Mac OS X ends, and Office X starts, from the icons in the Dock, to the toolbars of the applications. There are some nice touches, such as "throbbing" buttons, which look like 3-D water droplets, translucent background windows, and the sheets, which have replaced dialogue boxes, that "slide" out and expand from the Dock. There is very little totally new functionality, although much has been done to improve the suite, and to iron out the niggles that spoiled the experience of 2001. The graphics Office can produce are vastly enhanced because Office uses Mac OS X's Quartz engine technology. One extremely overdue feature is that the toolbars in all the applications can be stripped down to the bare essentials, even in Word, the most cluttered of all. The installation has also been cleaned up, and at last Office doesn't install extensions and control panels all over your hard drive. Running certain conflicting Classic applications while you are starting up Office X may create some problems, but this can be avoided by operating solely in Mac OS X. A final important development to note is that Office X files can be shared with users of Office for PC, because the formats are now the same and are back-compatible to Office 98. This is a worthy upgrade, essential for users of Mac OS X, beautifully well-thought out and designed, and one that will take Mac OS X even more into the mainstream as a viable platform. --Alison Jardine

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent., 26 May 2004

I got a copy of Office X two days ago, I've only so far used Word X and I'm delighted.

Office/Word 97 played a large part in my buying a mac to begin with - I was so sick of fighting it all day while it tried to "help" me I wanted to get as far away from MS software as possible. An iMac I thought - can't get Word on that.

You can, and its great. I've been using Appleworks 6, which I rather like, but Word X is clearly better. It lacks the over zealous auto-format, help you with that poppet ickkyness I remember form Office '97 and has small, but fantastic features that put it head and shoulders over Appleworks 6.

Stars for me are;
Running word count - small thing, but very much appreciated.
Formatting pallette - no more hunting through menus
Comments - absolutely fabulous feature, love it (think post-its)
Dictionary - suprising handy in the toolbar.
Grammar checker - embarassingly better than myself.
Track changes - not yet used this but very intrigued by it.

Cons?
Outliner - have to use mouse, I think in Word 2004 you have keyboard shortcuts.
Has crashed once, but for me the positives win the argument.

Glad I bought it.

4.0 out of 5 stars It is Hard to Say No!, 17 Feb 2006

If you are in business, or even if you are not but need a 'professional' office suite, then the choices are limited.

Like most Mac users I have a love/hate relationship with Microsoft as I have to bend with the majority far too often. However there are a number of pluses.

The first is that it is a good implementation on OSX and very stable on the Mac. It is also hugely powerful - too powerful for most people's needs, but when you need it you need it.

I have yet to find a spreadsheet that matches Excel. It has more functions that any single being will ever need but its useability once you climb the learning curve is astonishing.

Word is a monster, if anything over implemented, but again if you want a professional word-processor, this is the one for you.

PowerPoint is, well PowerPoint, and can consume hours of your time jigging it until it is just right.

Entourage, which comes in the box, is something of a waste of time for me - clever but not really my thing - I prefer stand alone systems for e-mail, newsgroups and the like, but you may find it useful. Interestingly it is well linked to Word, so you have one standard user dictionary.

Note: There is no data-base with the product. I think that this is cost-cutting exercise. It is hard to justify an 'Office' product without one.

I have no experience of Apple's most recent offerings. I invested in Office years ago and now it is a comfortable as an old pair of shoes. Like I say, 'If you need it you need it,' but you can get by without it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mac office 10 review, 17 Feb 2002

This review is from: Office Mac v. X (CD-ROM)
Excellent package for those who are studying wordprocessing spread sheets and power point on a p.c. at college. All your work and projects are compatable. All your work from college can be loaded on to your Mac. Simple to use. Excellent choice of fonts. Good clip art. Power point is excellent for graphs. Very simple to use. Word has a great spellcheck. It highlights your mistakes so you can correct as you go. Excell is easy to use. Makes spreadsheet aplications easy. It is a very useful package. Comes with extras like a notebook and calender. the package is ideal for office use or home use. Although expensive it is well worth the money. Appleworks doesn't really compare to this product.
