What’s new in this release of Office?

The 2013 versions of familiar Office applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint include new features that help you create, communicate and work efficiently from virtually anywhere. In addition to updating the traditional Office suites, Microsoft has developed brand new subscription versions of Office, specifically designed around the way customers use Office. Each new subscription offer will include the 2013 versions of the Office applications, for example Word, Excel and PowerPoint, plus cloud services such as Skype world minutes and online storage with SkyDrive.

Subscribers will also receive future rights to version upgrades as well as per-use rights across multiple PCs, Windows 8 tablets, iPads, Macs and select mobile devices including iPhones.1 Note: The Office applications you can use across PCs, Macs and other devices vary by platform.

1Visit www.office.com/information for a current list of devices. Internet connection required. Internet and mobile telephone usage charges may apply.

What is the difference between the Office 2013 suites and Office 365 plans?

Microsoft Office is still the name Microsoft uses for its familiar productivity software. Office suites have traditionally included applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. All Office 2013 suites include the latest versions of the applications, for use on a single PC.

Microsoft uses the name “Office 365” for products that include cloud services, such as additional SkyDrive online storage, Skype minutes for home use, Lync web conferencing or Exchange Online hosted email for businesses. Cloud services are features that are enabled over the Internet. All Office 365 products, such as Office 365 Personal, are paid for on a subscription basis, annually. Active subscribers will receive future rights to version upgrades as a benefit of their subscription. Entitlements vary by product.

What it includes:

  • Office on 1 PC or Mac, 1 Windows tablet or iPad.
  • Easily install Office Mobile on multiple smartphones - including iPhones, and Android phones (Office Mobile is already installed on Windows Phones).1
  • The latest versions of: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, Publisher , and Access.2
  • 1 TB of online storage in OneDrive.3
  • 60 minutes of Skype calls each month to phones in 40+ countries.4
  • One convenient subscription with automatic upgrades included so you’re always up to date with the latest features and services.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good value in limited circumstances 19 May 2014
By Mr. T. Anderson TOP 500 REVIEWER
Platform for Display:PC|Edition:Personal
It has to be said, buying Microsoft Office is pretty confusing. Quick guide:

If you buy a product called "Office 2013" you are getting just the desktop applications, but as an outright purchase. You get the version you buy and can run it for ever. The Home and Student edition is best value, but does not include Outlook or Publisher. Also, you can only install on one PC, and NOT on the iPad (other than the free read-only versions). Home and Business does have Outlook (still no Publisher) but again is for one PC only, and is fairly expensive.

If you buy a product called "Office 365" you are getting the desktop applications on subscription, plus some level of online (cloud) services. You generally get more applications: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Publisher and Access. You also get the right to the unlocked iPad apps which are rather good. If Office is upgraded while your subscription is live, you get the upgrade.

Wait, even that is not quite right. You can subscribe to Office 365 online and some of the plans do NOT include rights to the desktop or iPad applications, but do offer services like Exchange Online (excellent email service + calendar, tasks etc).

Still, THIS product does have the desktop applications on subscription, plus a handy 1TB OneDrive storage. This storage is added to the OneDrive account linked to the Microsoft account with which you activate Office. You also get 60 "world minutes" per month on Skype - these let you call landlines and mobiles (in a few countries) on Skype. It does NOT include Exchange online or SharePoint online; it is really nothing to do with the Office 365 business offering.

1.0 out of 5 stars Useless, Purchased the product 17 Sep 2014
Platform for Display:PC Download| Edition:Personal|Verified Purchase
Useless, Purchased the product, but it would not install. Amazon cancelled the order and told me to reorder as they suspected a fault. Second download would not install, Amazon could not help and passed me on to Microsoft. They said they would remotely install it, turns out they had no idea what they were doing, They removed everything they could from my computer that was not Microsoft related and then failed to install the program, I wasted hours trying to install this program and more hours restoring my personal settings to my computer after the clowns at Microsoft had messed them up. I cancelled the order and found an alternative. The product does not deserve one star but it is justified by they way Amazon acknowledged the problem, cancelled the orders and quickly refunded my payment.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not that straight forward. NOT THE CD ROM 28 Aug 2014
By BigE
Platform for Display:PC|Edition:Personal
when we ordered this Office 365 Personal from the Amazon website we are given the impression that this was the CD rom version we were ordering as our BT Broadband is not the fastest of connections this was our preference. Sadly when the package was opened it found to be the download version with just the product code which took ages to get onto our Win.8.1 PC. Hopefully, if there is any need for any reinstall this should be accommodated - It is still not clear just how we set up an annual subscription either as we so far have been unable to set up the auto renewal.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great software, lousy service. 2 Oct 2014
Platform for Display:PC| Edition:Personal|Verified Purchase
I need to be clear. Office is a well-established product. It is also by far the most widely accepted standard, even though there are now two international standards (it and the ODF open office). My problems are with (A) the bizarre activation instructions, (B) the rental idea.

(A) after a few days I received through the post an amusing Russian doll with a tiny piece of card inside containing the product key. Nothing else.

If they had printed on the card: use this key to download the software, then activate by associating the product to a MS email account (set one up if necessary) - this will be the middle option you get when you launch one of the apps after downloading, if they had done that, I would have given it 4 stars.

But they didn't. They made me think the activation key was needed to activate the product. That misunderstanding wasted three
hours of my life, which I resent.

Anyone my age (64) is well familiar with MS' total inability to understand the meaning of the word cost. They are determined to made everyone who uses their software pay. That is daft. Many people will not use it if they have to pay £50/year or whatever. Since the cost of distributing a million copies is precisely nil to MS, it is no loss if some of those people get to use it without paying. The snag is that to lock it down tight involves infuriating 5% of paying customers.

(B) rental. MS has been trying to move over to rental for decades. Finally it is getting some traction. I dislike the concept. So minus 1 star for that.

Oh, the hoops I had to jump through to discover the solution set out in (A) are unbelievable - strange people at the end of phone lines, chat lines, all speaking appalling English and probably paid much less than the UK minimum wage ...

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent product 12 Jun 2014
By Ann
Platform for Display:PC| Edition:Personal|Verified Purchase
I use it a lot for writing articles and uploading them to OneDrive - the link is seamless and very easy to use. OneNote and other features are also very practical and helpful. It's good that Microsoft launched Office 365 for one user - makes it a bit more economical and well worth the money.
