Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Based on the BattleTech table-top board games, MechCommander 2 is a mission-based, real-time strategy game where you control gigantic mechanised vehicles (mechs). While the focus is on strategic combat, preparation plays an equally vital part. How you prepare for a battle is often more important than the actual tactics during a fight. Your success will depend greatly on discovering new technology and implementing it within your mechs. You can be victorious with the most rudimentary strategies so long as you've picked the right weaponry beforehand. Between missions you're treated to entertaining full-motion video scenes that lead you to your next objective.

Although the game makes some key improvements from the original, it has its fair share of problems. First off, it's totally linear. There's never a need to stray from the key objectives because there's nothing else to discover or achieve. The artificial intelligence, while greatly improved, has a tendency to jump the gun and attack enemies immediately, making stealth tactics difficult. Lastly the system requirements are misleading--even on a 1GHz machine with a GeForce3-based graphics card there's plenty of slowdown when the screen is filled with units. On the positive side, the gameplay is tight, mech customisation is deep and this is one of the few RTS games where 3-D environments factor into tactics.--Raymond M. Padilla

Quality Control Anyone? 10 April 2002
By CJ TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
When you have to hunt down Mechcommander 2 fansites, find a good noticeboard and trawl through it to find a solution to the problem preventing you playing a new game, it isn't a good start. MC2 would not run properly using my Radeon 8500. I had to alter a game config file to get it to work, there is no mention of this on the Microsoft site and no patch to correct it either.

As I understand it, this is just the tip of the iceberg of bugs with this game, but so far I haven't experienced any others.

BUT when you do get to play Mechcommander 2, it's good. Controls are easily picked up, some very pretty graphics (gunfire and explosions being especially good), a nice range of units, and compact, accessible missions are all good to see. Even the hammy acting in the slightly unnecessary FMV cut-scenes is endearing.

This is a good game, just beware of the potential problems and hope Microsoft get round to releasing a patch soon.

About the best RTS that has ever graced the Battletech universe. I was so desperate for this game I imported it from the US before it was released in the UK.
After many hours of great game play I finally (to my only disappointment) finished it. But, with the built in mission creator and the wealth of missions now available to download on the internet, this will be one game I will keep going back to.
If you have a good system this can be played at the higher specs (850Mhz + GeForce 2+), but it can lag when there are a lot of units on the battlefield, but turn off the smoke, shadows, multiple lighting sources and the videos and it whizzes along very happily without loosing too much.
The amount of units available is immense, and the salvage options are fantastic.
The AI is pretty good and although the computer will fight like a Clanner (regardless if you're engaging inner sphere mechs or Clans) and only engage a single mech at a time, it can be challenging if you don't cheat and play the game on the easy levels replaying any of the missions you did not like the outcome of.
My advice:
If you're into Battletech, why don't you have this already?
If your an RTS fan, this will be a little different than your Red Alert and Warzone, but give it a go, try to get into the whole Battletech mind set, and you will not be disappointed.
I'd also say that if you do not have the recommended specs (not the minimum) don't ever buy a game out of your PCs league. Minimum specs are just for marketing, the recommended specs should always be classed as the minimum. If you can't afford to keep up, buy a Playstation.

Such little depth.. 19 Oct 2001
Good presentation and graphics and sound.
Gameplay: This game is fun, especially so if your new to the mechcommander scene or are under 16ish.
The older gamer will find out too soon that this game has little depth. the AI is terrible (the enemy lock on to the first mech they see and can follow it all the way across the map whilst your other mechs pummel it). Veteran stategy gamers should ignore this release. This is a good christmas present for a 14 yr old whos likes strategy gaming (not many!). I dont know what the problems people were having with performance. my 1ghz AMD 256Meg Geforce2MX 32Meg runs this game perfectly in 1024x768 max detail.
