Living up to its claims of photo realistic graphics, it's a game brimming with options, yet also equipped with a useful if a little drawn out tutorial section. Still, the learning curve is further aided by special aids, which can be turned off as the player gets better, to help with judging the likes of aim and power.
Included are six brand new courses to the Links franchise, along with a comprehensive and genuinely useable course designer. There's a choice on how you play your strokes too. While the traditional gauge that permeates most golf games is included, a real time swing--whereby the mouse movement controls the club hitting the ball--is a more interesting way to play.
The devil in Links 2003 though is well and truly in the detail. From the nuances of creating your own golfer through to the visualisation of the courses, it's clear that little expense has been spared. That the game also comes with a challenging and long lasting single-player mode in addition to time-guzzling online multiplayer options is but a further compelling reason to buy the game. For if you're a golf game fan, nothing on any format does this better. And heck, even if you're not and you like your sports simulations, it really is worth finding out what all the fuss is about. --Simon Brew
The most detailed golf environments possible Links 2003 features a powerful graphics engine producing photorealistic graphics. Grass, sand, water and other textures are rendered in amazing detail. There's also a selection of all-new championship courses from around the world. Links 2003 features six brand-new courses: Cabo del Sol (Mexico), Kauri Cliffs (New Zealand), Gleneagles (Scotland), The Tribute at Otsego Club (US), Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail-Cambrian Ridge (US) and Skeleton Coast, a fictional course set along the African coastline. Players will also be able to enjoy hundreds of additional courses created by fans and Microsoft.
More realistic control over every shot-New Real-Time Swing lets the mouse become the club, with ball physics factoring in speed, tempo, direction and course conditions in real-time so each shot more closely simulates an actual golf shot. You can also design a course with the most powerful 3-D course designer available then share it online with thousands of golfers. A new library of hundreds of objects, new texture sizes up to 512 x 512, and new tools make the most powerful, 3-D real-time course design tool better than ever.

An excellent golf sim from Microsoft,
This review is from: Links 2003 (Video Game)
One of the advantages of having a Broadband connection is that you are able to download sizeable game demos in a matter of minutes. And so was the case with Links 2003. My wife and I have played the Tiger Woods series for quite some time now, and were anxious to see how Microsoft's own title would compare. I am very pleased to say that Links 2003 is well worth the money, and I am only sorry that I didn't hear of the series sooner! The first thing to strike you about the game are the graphics. Microsoft have included six courses in the game (with the option to download more if so desired) and the attention to detail here is superb, and at times are a breathtaking sight. You can actually imagine yourself being there. The golfers themselves are well rendered too, and have their own 'commentary' which is both witty and intelligent, adding a sense of humour to the game. Also it comes on three discs, so obviously there is a great amount of detail there. It would be unfair of me to compare this to the Tiger Woods games, as I enjoy both immensely, so I'll take the safe option and recommend both this and Tiger Woods 2003. Take my advice and add this to your collection as soon as possible. Now, if only I could get my wife off the computer - It's my turn to play now!

Links 2003 - check your display card and memory,
By A Customer
This review is from: Links 2003 (Video Game)
My father bought Links 386 about 10 years ago and this led to many a great tournament in our family. I was keen to upgrade and having checked the minumum requirements of Links 2003 matched my old Pentium III 400mhz running Win98SE, I ordered the product. Installation was successfull and no errors were reported until I tried to play the game when it appeared that the Voodoo3 2000 display card with 16MB memory could not do the job. I then tried the game on my 2001 laptop running XP with an Intel 1.2Ghz with 369MB RAM. Again installation was successful but as soon as I tried to play and the 'rendering' part of the programme began, it would freeze. The display card here is S3 Graphics Twister with S3 Hotkey and also 16MB memory. Again this seems to be the problem.I hope to try this on a more modern computer but having managed to secure this at under a fiver, I resorted to ordering Links LS Classic at around £2. It is in fact Links 2000 and will not run on XP but is perfect for an old Win98 machine. This is the game I remember and despite its 'older' graphics the game is still a lot of fun especially for that money.
