5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome webcam, but gets a little hot 29 April 2011
By Michael
Amazon Verified Purchase
This webcam is pretty awesome. Once you manage to prise it out of Microsoft's iron-clad bomb-proof armored packaging (seriously, it took about seven minutes and a pair of scissors to work it out! Oh, and you might take a while to find the little black rubber lens cap, which is inside the white paper drivers-'n'-documents box), it actually seems surprisingly small and light. Getting it to work also requires Microsoft's annoying proprietary drivers and an internet connection, which I assume is because the ones on the disk are out of date and so I was treated to an agonizing 80MB download. However, once it's up and running it's easy to see why it commands the price it does and why you'll learn to put up with all the slightly annoying drivers and the impossible package.

Also of note is that new firmware is available for the camera, which is meant to make it better, faster, shinier and generally something you should do; I can't comment on whether this is true, because I installed it before I used it. Whether the result of the update or not, the camera seems to work pretty well. The drivers too aren't too bad to use if you can bear the download time; as well as letting you zoom the picture (fairly cool, and doesn't seem to affect quality either), there's a few effects you can apply to the video output even during a video call. Some of them, such as the hats, face distortions, and actually fairly cool background blurring rely on face detection (which is surprisingly reliable), while others overlay filters - black & white, sepia, posterise and so on. The driver interface isn't bad either, with a little icon in the task bar allowing you to change zoom, effects and settings quite easily.

5.0 out of 5 stars Microsoft LifeCam Studio (streamed using Nefsis) 15 Feb 2011
A Kid's Review
I was very impressed with the Microsoft LifeCam studio which has now replaced my Microsoft Lifecam cinema HD. Compared to the Cinema the lower resolution look clearer and brighter. At 720p the picture is much brighter than the Cinema and the fact that it DOES stream using Nefsis at 1080p is amazing. Be warned however you do need a very good computer and at least 2.5meg up and 2.5meg down to stream 1080p at 30fps

This is the best webcam I have used. I had the HD500 before this and the Lifecam VX300 before that. The images are bright and clear even in low light. Using skype, callers say the picture quality is very clear and bright even in low light conditions. You can zoom the image add special effects to yourself, glasses etc using its recognition software. The unit has a rubber mount that securely fits to any monitor and seems the same as the cheaper H5D-00003. The sleek tubular body is elegant and is in a brushed aluminium finish. It looks big on amazon product page but is nice and compact sitting on a large monitor.

The auto focus functionality works well and is relatively quick. The webcam supports 1080p at 30fps in a 16:9 aspect.

I have not used the camera with Live Messenger as I do not use those applications.

Overall a great product. 1080p in a camera this small is nothing short of amazing!

3.0 out of 5 stars OK Cam 6 Jun 2011
By Anemogi
The quality of this camera is great no doubt, however when on skype the difference in quality to any average camera isn't much different

8Mp and 1080p get but again if its for use with skype i would just go for something cheaper because although you can get great quality over the net the quality is the same as any old cam.

I expected this to be better over the net.

4.0 out of 5 stars Web cam HD 1 July 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase
Good camera mount works well on flat screen monitor and has a standard screw mount for a tripod - disappointed that the drivers do not allow you to convert from straight image to mirror image. Very annoying as most people find it easier to look at a mirror image of themselves. There is plenty of comment no various forums and despite this being a simple software problem Microsoft seem to not care about customer feedback. Yawcam does correct the image but is a bit specialised software - it should be in the driver. Therefore 4 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Picture Quality, Great Design 29 Jan 2011
This was very much a wing and a prayer type thing when I bought this. The high quality of the images and the design of the camera itself can't be disputed but I'm running this on my macbook and it's compatible; to an extent.
Mac only runs video chat in 4:3 and this webcam 16:9, so the picture gets distorted. However, I'm using this for animation work and am using software that accommodates any aspect ratio - so I can use this without warped images and as such this camera, though not perfect on this OS, meets my needs 100%

I had a lot of difficulty finding out whether or not this was compatible, hence my trepidation and so I hope this review will be helpful for someone in a similar boat to me.

The installation was straightforward and after installing the latest firmware I was able to capture the Lifecam Studio using Sony Vegas Pro 10 (Capture Video, DV). The maximum frame rates are as follows: 1920x1080 7.5fps, 1280x720 10fps, 960x544 15fps, 800x488 15fps, 640x480 30fps, 640x360 30fps. Had these figures been included in the product spec I would not have ordered the item as I was looking for a USB video camera to run with a Blue Yeti USB mic, so they would both be in sync. The other disadvantage with the Lifecam Studio is that there is no optical zoom facility. So I returned the item and received an immediate refund from Amazon, so no complaints. Nevertheless the camera is very well made and has a metal tripod socket, a good picture and good software support, so it's probably an excellent choice as a webcam.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great camera, crystal clear audio and video!
The video quality on this thing is fantastic, just a shame my internet upload can't keep up and it's compressed quite a lot by Skype. That being said you can't really ask for more. Read more

It's a shame that this product I've purchased did not work on my desktop or laptop but looking at the rating of the seller I don't think this was on purpose.
