Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2002 has come on leaps and bounds since the last edition. With improved graphics, greater realism and plenty of options you will be hard pushed to find a better flight simulator.

They always say that God is in the detail, and the Flight simulator team have proved it here. The main difference you will notice straight away is in the landscape detail, taking on ideas that they have learnt through previous versions and their work on Microsoft Train Simulator (it's the same team), they have produced scenery that is very impressive. The sea shimmers in the sunlight, while waves crash against the sea shore. Improved detail also means that certain cities like Las Vegas have character to them--you can see the lights and fireworks at night--while some airports now have the ability for you to dock at specific gates.

It's not just the scenery though that has been improved and Microsoft Flight Simulator has now got a fully interactive Air Traffic Control system allowing you to request everything from landing procedures to traffic information. The need for a runway is no guarantee however, as the game has also introduced an amphibian plane to content with, allowing you to land on any lake, sea or river.

With so many features including downloadable live weather, multiplayer functions and even an analysis option to record your flights, this is one hefty product that will quench the thirst of any flight sim fan.

While the standard edition will give you virtually all you need for a flight sim game, the professional version is dedicated to those you know what they want. With additional planes, an editor to design your own planes and the impressive instructor feature over the Web--it allows you when practising with others over the Web to force errors--this edition is well worth the addition £20, and what's more at the moment Microsoft is offering £15 cash back.--Jason Denwood

5.0 out of 5 stars As Real As It Gets!, 4 Mar 2002
This review is from: Microsoft Flight Sim 2002: Professional Edition (with Free Strategy Guide) (Video Game)
Its no wonder they say you can learn to fly a plane on this simulator. If it doesn't do that much, it definatley gets you half way there! I love it, and microsoft have done well on many standards. the graphics for one, are phenominal, and now with the added feature of artificial intelligence, you can actually fly with other planes in the sky. My personal favorite, are the new Jumbo Jet, and the Cessna Amphibian. They are both wonders of the sky, and playing them on your comoputer screen is a dram come true. One thing i advise anyone who would like to purcahse this game, is that the use a joystick. I use the Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback Joystick, which has the added feature of you having to battle with the plane, any joystick should work for this game. Another wonder is the new Air Traffic Control (ATC) addition, added to the game. This allows you to discuss landing and take off plans, which is great for clearing the runway for an emergency landing! You can create your own plane wth ease, on the Pro. Edition's added features. Its a great buy for Pilots, to the person who wants to try to fly some of the most recognised aircraft in the world. Better than any other that i have tried,

4.0 out of 5 stars At last Microsoft has got it right, 21 Feb 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Microsoft Flight Sim 2002: Professional Edition (with Free Strategy Guide) (Video Game)
After reading all the hype about FS2002 I was still not convinced that the poor frame rates and performance of FS2000 had been overcome.
Well I took the gamble of buying it, and its payed off.

At long last Microsoft seem to have got it right. FS 98 and 2000 were a real frustration, coming into land the frame rate would drop like a stone.
But FS2002 is VERY smooth, no problems, the aircraft are easier to handle, the interactive air traffic control is great, the graphics especially clouds and lighting are excellent.

Taking off and landing there is no slowdown at all
You don't need a supercomputer, I run it on a Pentium III, 128MB RAM Geforce 2TI 64M.

There is no manual in the box - true, but you do get the manuals on the CD in adobe acrobat format so you can easily print parts out.

All in All FS2002 is a great inprovement not only in performance but also in features, the airports have a great deal more detail and there are other aircraft taking off and landing.

If you have put off buying FS2002 because of previous bad experience in terms of performanace, then be assured FS2002 is a different beast.

BUY IT !

I work as a flight examiner and cannot fault FS 2002. The simulation is competent and especially good if you have an interest in 'instrument flying' and practising approaches into your local airfield. Combined with 'FSMETEO' and actual weather conditions this is an invaluable tool in flight training. It's fun too!
