Create compelling Web sites visually
If you think and create visually, use the state-of-the-art design surface to layout your Web page. You can make design decisions on the fly, knowing that you're seeing a faithful representation of the final browser-rendered page.

Drag and drop controls simplify adding rich media, such as Silverlight from Microsoft Expression Blend, Silverlight video, Adobe Flash, and Windows Media. And advanced Adobe Photoshop file import gives you complete control over imported layers and transparency.

Create standards-based Web sites more quickly and easily
If you think and breathe code, Expression Web has you covered there too with flexible support for a wide range of essential technologies: PHP, HTML/XHTML, XML/XSLT, CSS, JavaScript, ASP.NET and ASP.NET AJAX, Silverlight, Flash, Photoshop files, and video/audio for webcasting.

Expression Web speeds the essential task of cross-browser debugging. With SuperPreview, you don't need a Web service to debug your pages on the same machine that you use for development. SuperPreview not only shows a high-fidelity rendering of how pages will look on different browsers, but it also identifies the element's tag, size and position, applied styles, and location in the DOM (Document Object Model) tree so you can quickly fix the error.

Once you've identified an error, Snapshot Preview helps you fix it faster. By displaying a high-fidelity browser rendering that updates as you edit your code, Snapshot Preview saves you the time and effort of loading the page in a browser for each code change.

If you're a designer or developer, use Expression Web to do what you do best. And if you're part of a diverse team, sharing an Expression Web project has never been easier thanks to seamless integration with Expression Studio and Visual Studio.

Expression Web 3 also includes the following full applications:

  • Microsoft Expression Design 3 is the perfect companion to Expression Web. Leverage existing artwork, or use intuitive drawing tools to quickly build sophisticated vector assets. Seamlessly transfer them to your Expression Web projects knowing that their fidelity will be maintained throughout the entire designer-developer workflow.

  • Microsoft Expression Encoder 3 encodes a wide array of video file formats so you can stream live video from webcams and camcorders or screen capture your PC. Make simple edits to video files and enhance your media with overlays and advertising. Choose encoding settings, choose from a range of player templates and publish rich media experiences with Microsoft Silverlight.

Using SuperPreview, you can preview and compare pages simultaneously in multiple browsers, even in multiple versions of Internet Explorer. You can also compare browser views against a comprehensive mock-up ("comp") image.

Deep Zoom
You can add both Silverlight and Seadragon Ajax Deep Zoom Composer images to your page in Expression Web from a composition created in Deep Zoom Composer.

FTP publishing
Publishing your site with FTP is faster than ever. When you click Publish, Expression Web automatically transfers several files at a time, instead of transferring them one by one, and it transfers them faster. You can easily manage multiple sites and remote locations and you can publish a site to multiple destinations.

Also, you can now publish your files over a secure FTP connection, using FTPS or SFTP.

Silverlight
Silverlight is a cross-browser, cross-platform plug-in for delivering rich interactive applications for the web. With Expression Web, you can add Silverlight video and applications to your web pages.

Expression Encoder 3 is now included in Expression Web. You can use it to convert your video to Silverlight and easily add it to your Web page. You can even choose a "skin" to customise how the video player appears on your site.

Internet Explorer 8
Expression Web supports Windows Internet Explorer 8, so you can update your older sites to be compliant with and take advantage of the new technologies in Internet Explorer 8.

Professional graphics tools
Powerful vector drawing and editing tools in the included copy of Expression Design 3 let you explore new artistic possibilities and create compelling graphic designs and illustrations.

And Snapshot Preview provides a high-fidelity browser preview that updates live as you edit your code, saving you the time and effort of loading the page in a browser for each code change. Build Dynamic Interactive Sites

Publishing Flexibility
Choose the FTP method for publishing your site, whether FTP, SFTP, or FTPS, depending on what your Web server requires. When you click Publish, Expression Web automatically transfers several files at a time, instead of transferring them one by one, and it transfers them faster. You can easily manage multiple sites and remote locations and you can publish a site to multiple destinations. Also, Expression Web can do "live" on-server edits via FTP, which saves time and cost, while also reducing errors.

Import Photoshop files
Expression Web can import Photoshop files directly with complete control over transparency, the layers imported and the converted image format (PNG, GIF, and JPEG). Expression Web remembers your layer and format settings so that you can quickly reimport to reflect any changes to the Photoshop original.

I'm by no means an expert when it comes to web development. However, I've come to be reasonably comfortable with Expression Web 3. The user interface/colour scheme is, in my opinion, a nice improvement over V2 and with a bit of time - wouldn't bee too hard for a Frontpage user to get to grips with. Under normal circumstances I would definitely recommended you get this, but sadly there's a terrible bug that has not been fixed yet ...

Clicking the undo button doesn't usually do what you want. Instead of going back one step as you would expect, it sometimes (more often than not) will jump back an unknown number of steps - which could easily be the last 15-20 minutes or so of work. A lot of people will point out that you should save your work more often, but I see it like this - when I hit an undo button, what do I expect it to do? Should is undo the last change I made, or undo everything to the point of the last save/autosave?

Other that this problem (which may be fixed in a bug fix?), the program is really nice. I would have appreciated a zoom feature like that in Dreamweaver, but otherwise a great piece of software. If by the time you read this, a fix has been made available for the undo command, you can add another star to my current rating.

EDIT 22nd October, 2009:
Having done a bit more research on the undo bug, it would appear that not everyone experiences this problem. Most issues appear to be encountered by people running the 64 bit edition of Windows Vista. As it happens, I'm also using Vista X64, so there may well be some link there.

Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Installing Web Expression 3 was simple and straightforward. The initial install from DVD took about 8 minutes. However, it came with a sticker with a URL telling you to download SP1 for the product. The sticker wasn't essential as, at least on Windows Vista Home Premium, the Microsoft update will discover the service pack for itself.

Thankfully, there was no need to reboot the PC after either the main installation or the Service Pack. The SP update creates a system restore point, which can be quite time consuming, but again doesn't require a restart.

Web Expression 3 politely asks if it should become your default web editor on startup, rather than following the usual Microsoft attitude of assuming that it can take over.

If you've used Dreamweaver before, you'll be very comfortable with the user interface.

Positives:
* It defaults to UTF-8 as default character set, which is the standard recommended by the World Wide Web Consortium, who define the standards for HTML, CSS and other web technologies.

* The CSS editor is decent.

* Configuring uploads to multiple locations, such as test servers and live servers is easy and works most of the time. It occasionally glitches when comparing file times on FTP to Linux Apache server, so re-uploads files unnecessarily during synchronisation.

* Being able to set views for different web browsers at different resolutions is very convenient and should encourage people to build flexible web designs.

* Included templates will let a novice produce a basic commercial web site with little skill or knowledge.

Negatives:

* The majority of web sites in the world are hosted on Apache web servers, for which editing the .htaccess file can be very important. Web Expression 3 does not let you even see that it exists.

* It creates homepage as default.html - index.html is the more common standard, but there seems to be no way to alter this.

* Although claiming to be standards compliant, Web Expression 3 tends to push the Microsoft technologies and techniques, like ASP, .Net and Silverlight rather than leaving it to the user building sites for a Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP server needs a lot of work.

* There are a variety of tweaks needed to ensure stantards compliance.

* The PHP editor is very basic - Netbeans is much better for PHP programming.

* There's no direct support for Sourcesafe, a Microsoft version control product. If you require some version control (which I'd highly recommend for serious web development) you're required to purchase additional Microsoft products.

* Web Expression 3 only has the option for server messages in US English - Sorry I'm British..., but it did detect that my default spell-checking should be done in UK English

* When switching to or from "Sub Site" editing, Web Expression 3 would sometimes crash.

Overall, a Adobe Dreamweaver CS4 Student Edition (PC DVD) clone, oriented towards Microsoft web technologies.

I have being using Dreamweaver MX for many years and have never being able to find a replacement. This is it, at a much better price and better functionality (php is supported but not ColdFusion by the way). It is very easy to migrate Dreamweaver dwt template files and also the user interface is very similar. Just one very annoying bug with scrolling on my Win7 x64 where the scroll is slow and also flickers, this should be fixed by Microsoft quite soon I hope. If like me you are stuck with a non-upgradable dreamweaver, this is the product to go for.
