5.0 out of 5 stars This a great and inexpensive way to learn and/or stay up-to-date on Excel. 31 Jan. 2014
By Richard E Johnson Jr - Published on
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
My goal was to get hands on training so that I would be totally up-to-date on Excel. This book is doing the job! The format is to take a topic and discuss it stating at a beginning level (the book addresses primarily beginning and intermediate level topics). (Updated Comment: But after using this book extensively for more than a month I would say that unless you are a true power user or only want an all encompassing reference book you will benefit from this book for two reasons: (1)so much has been added to Excel since 2007, which the book breaks down for you, (2)it introduces many fairly advanced topics such as (1)conditional statements AVERAGEIF,AVERAGEIFS,SUMIF,SUMIFS), Pivot Tables, Pivot Charts,Linking, and Consolidating data, Filtering Pivot tables, using search filters and slicers, Macros, just to highlight some topics. In other words even long time Excel users can learn a lot by reading and completing the exercises in this book. And if you are thinking about MOS Excel certification this gets you well on the way, as it is published by Microsoft Press. But don't worry if you just want to set up and print worksheets that is in here too.

The author is careful to provide specific examples beginning at a nuts and bolts level so you can really get it. But again new and at least intermediate to advance topics are introduced. Then you are instructed to get a file for the specific chapter and follow the step by step instructions (the downloadable practice files are included in the book's price). This is when you get a chance to see if you can do it on your own (following the step by step instructions provided). You can repeat the exercises as many times as you want until it sinks in. I used the Kindle version but used the Kindle PC version(free from Kindle) for visual clarity and screen pictures are clear) and so I could put the instructions right next to the Excel program as I was running it. You will need Excel 2013, which now can be purchased from Microsoft on a monthly basis at very affordable prices. All in all this is a very affordable way to get hands on experience with Excel and stay up-to-date. You will learn a lot!

5.0 out of 5 stars Actually manipulating the data and menus is an excellent way to learn and retain information 5 Nov. 2014
By Peter H - Published on
One of the main reasons I purchased this book was because it's a Microsoft book and also because of the practice files, which are still available and which most other Office books do not provide. Actually manipulating the data and menus is an excellent way to learn and retain information. It's as good as taking an Excel video class.

However, retrieving the practice files requires a little effort and this may not work from an iPad:

1. Go to "".
2. In the search box, type: "Practice Files Excel 2013" and then press the ENTER key.
3. Several related books will appear.
4. Select "Microsoft Excel 2013 Step By Step."
5. A picture of the book cover and the prices will appear.
6. Below the picture, select "Companion Content."
6. You will then see these instructions:
- 1. Click the following link: Download the companion content.
- 2. Click Save.
- 3. Locate the .zip file on your computer. Right-click the file, click Extract All, and then follow the instructions.
7. Follow these instructions and the compressed files will be downloaded.
8. Unzip the files, if necessary, and then use them with the corresponding book chapters.

The site may ask you to enter the book's ISBN number from the publishing information page and to create an account, so go ahead and perform these steps and then follow the procedure above.

4.0 out of 5 stars This book is titled appropriately! 28 Jan. 2015
By Lisa C. - Published on
This book does take you step by step and helps you to complete whatever it is you need done: charts, design, organization, formulas, etc. I needed this book to help me with assignments for my online classes in math and economics. When I didn't have time to "experiment" with Excel 2013 on my laptop, "Step by Step" showed me how to do what my assignment called for. If you want a book that shows you what to do and how to do it when you don't have time to figure it out on your own, this is the book for you!
