There is much to praise here. It has the diverse coverage one would expect and the designers have capitalised on their connection to Microsoft, which means the graphics and interactive elements are second to none. Excellent video images and computer graphics complement the text entries, making the material especially attractive to younger readers and a significant aid to learning.

There are also great sound and music effects that link up to relevant entries and round out the interactive element; the entries can be updated online and there are also good maps. In order to run this product you need Microsoft software: at least Microsoft 98 and Internet Explorer 6.0, as well as a minimum of 64 MB of RAM.

It is important to note, though, that while the coverage is wide-ranging and should be enough to suit most purposes, this is not as thorough an encyclopaedia as some. Encarta have other products--Encarta Encyclopedia Plus 2003, Encarta Premium Suite 2003 CD and Encarta Premium Suite 2003 DVD --which have significantly wider coverage: more articles, more photos and many more features. But for interactive learning for the family, this is an excellent product. --Toby Green
