4.0 out of 5 stars Microsoft DIS 10.0 - it's my preferred choice 6 Mar 2005
I'm not a professional graphic designer, photo editor or any other creative individual. What I wanted from a program was the ability to edit photos, change their size and composition etc with ease. I also wanted different filters and the ability to cut out the misc stuff in photos that made the difference between good photos you'd show to friends and poor photos that you'd dump.
Given my above wants I trialled the mainstream products from Adobe, Ulead, JASC and Microsoft. I also trialled the free progams I could find on the internet. In my opionion, the best products, in order from the best to the worst are:
1. Microsoft Digital Image Suite [DIS] 10.0
2. Adobe Photoshop Elements V3
3. JASC Paintshop Pro 9
4. Ulead PhotoImpact 10
5. The free stuff found on the internet
I felt instantly comfortable with Microsoft's software. It has all the features I had read about regarding the Adobe and JASC products but I found these features to be more user friendly and intuitive to use within DIS. It is for this reason I rated DIS the highest. Interestingly, I also found Microsoft's program performed the edits I requested more quickly than the other programs. Overall, Microsoft's DIS may at first appear to be a relatively simple program, but that is down to its simple and intuitive layout rather than being a simple program. I have actually found DIS to be a very powerful program.
My gut feeling is that Adobe's Photoshop V3 is ultimately more powerful than Digital Image Suite and, if I were a professional creative person, then I would probably be willing to spend loads of money and/or time on a course that would teach me how to make the most of it. But I don't have the inclination, time or money for that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unusual for Microsoft, this is actually useable. 21 Oct 2004
Software for Digital Image Editing is usually complex and expensive (e.g. Photoshop), but this package is not expensive and is actually very easy to use.
Results are immediately displayed and can be quickly undone if you don't like them. Plus, the menus are easy to understand, they do exactly what they say without useing DTP jargon, one of the biggest failings of most others, which to be fair, are aimed at professionals.
Out of the box it supports most of the popular image formats and can save to most others. It is a superb solution for the average to highly competant digital camera user.
I would recommend it even to the professional for its range of features and excellent value.

5.0 out of 5 stars So Simple - So Good 8 Jun 2005
By Megman
Verified Purchase
If you want easy to use photo editing and organiser software, look no further.
Have used Picture It! and Digital Image Suite 9 in the past, but found DIS 10 to be the best from Microsoft so far.
Easier to use than Adobe and JASC software and a fraction of the price.
Powerful editing tools and filters ensure your photos will look there best. Minilab enables you to edit multiple pictures similtaniously, a great time saver. A host of other tools and filters enable the creation of the 'perfect' photo or project. With over 3000 templates and 5000 clip-art images, you can do a lot more than edit photographs. The Intelligent Panoramic Stitching tool is fantastic.
The Organising and Archiving software makes storing and finding your phots easy.
Takes a little time to be come fully conversant and the excellent manual is invaluable.
All in all, a great piece of software for the price.

Storing photos is doddle. After struggling for a year with the other well known one,it is now a pleasure to to edit photos and put them in a Album that I understand.

Microsoft Digital Image Suite 10 is wonderful. The software arrived today and very fast delivery from Amazon.
I loaded the software and from the beginning it was so easy to use.
After thirty minutes I created my first ever photo video with music and burned it onto a CD which also works on my DVD player as a movie.
Excellent value for money and great if you are interested in Digital media.

5.0 out of 5 stars Microsoft Digital Image Suite 10.0 21 Jan 2005

Excellent piece of software. I have used a number of editing suits in the past but find this one from Microsoft the best by far. Very easy to use and you can have a stunning DVD/CD in no time. Have also suggested this software to two other colleagues who have also bought it. Well done Microsoft

This software does its job brilliantly; you can't compare it to Adobe Photoshop as Photoshop is a professional graphic designer enabling you to seriously edit your photos. Whereas Microsoft DIS will allow you to make your photo look clearer, newer, resized to 6x4 and then printed off in about a minute.

Here are some of the features that I think are really useful to the home desktop PC and families.

The Auto Fixes: Colour Auto Fix, Exposure Auto Fix, Contrast Auto Fix and Levels Auto Fix. Once you have applied all of these you should notice a big difference in freshness, especially if the photo is not of the best quality.

The Arty Effects: Antique, Black and White, Negative, Chalk, Charcoal, Chrome, Colour Pencil, Dry Brush, Emboss, Film Grain, Glowing Edges, Mosaic, Sepia, Stained Glass, Water Colour. These are actually quite good and could be used to create the perfect wallpaper.

It's also got the other usual stuff like redeye fix, rotate, crop, flip, sharpness, resize etc.

All in all it is a brilliant tool, and is amazing for certain tasks. So I would say buy it, because at the moment it is under ten pounds. However if you are looking for something more I would recommend the GIMP, it's free and extremely similar to Photoshop which costs hundreds.
