Ideal post pub-game,

This review is from: Crackdown (Xbox 360) (Video Game)
As a one liner intro to this review: this is a good game that I would recommend to any recreational gamer (if you are the type who plays a game 24/7 for 3 weeks and then says 'there is nothing to this game' then it's not for you).
Yes, it lacks a 'real' story line to follow through in the manner the likes of Gears of war/Lost Planet do, but then this is in a different genre. What it does give you is the ability to 'mess around' that a lot of the other X360 games just don't. I must admit I spent hours just driving/running around doing tricks and stuff completely ignoring the plot just to see what the game can do - and it certainly does not disappoint. For me this is the greatest thing about this game, you can turn it on for 5 minutes or for 5 hours and you can get something out of it without worrying about 'getting stuck' and walking away - it all depends on what you are looking for. Similarly it's 'mess around' factor makes it a good social game if you have a few mates back post pub, in the same way GTA did on the PS2. Just to quickly address some other reviews - I have had this game for about 2 months, and whilst I don't play on it continuously, it is still something I go back to and enjoy. I leant it to my brother for a week and he has now gone out and bought it. Similarly I found the targeting and controls absolutely fine. Buy if: - You like to mess around and not follow a restrictive story line - You like GTA series but want a superman/batman angle on it (or can't be bothered to wait for new release) - Aren't too bothered about ultra-realism, the graphics are supposed to be kind of cartoony/marvel I guess Don't buy if: - You are going to spend 8 hours a day playing (you'll prob get bored due to the next point) - You want a major story to get involved in - You expect this to be a 'proper' shooter, this is NOTHING like Gears of war etc. - You have a girlfriend who says things like 'this is a bit silly, its not very realistic' If you aren't sure then rent/borrow first. You'll know within a few hours whether you like the format or not.

Overrated, but good nonetheless.,

= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Crackdown (Xbox 360) (Video Game)
Let me start off by saying that Crackdown is good, but as others have made it seem, it is not fantastic.
As was mentioned in another review the lock-on targetting system is flawed and does often seem to lock-on to anything but the enemy. The comic styled graphics look very good, especially from the top of the agency tower, and there is a huge amount of stuff to do in the game. LOADS!!. Although I do have a coulpe more complaints. There is no real story to be followed, gangs have taken over, you have to stop them. Also the process of eliminating all the key gang members is very short, and afterwards there is almost nothing else to do than aquire the achievements, though this is is very fun in its own right. Don't get me wrong this game is definitely worth buying, I'm just saying do not expect anything mind-blowing

A Fun Cel-Shaded Sandbox Shooter,
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Crackdown (Xbox 360) (Video Game)
Crackdown is a cel-shaded sandbox style fighting game in the style of Grand Theft Auto and Saint's Row - but this time you're on the side of justice. Sort of. Best of all, you get into the free beta of Halo 3!
It's funny how many people are instantly buying this game just to get into the Halo 3 beta. We of course are thrilled about the Halo 3 part - we are avid fans of the Halo series - but Crackdown actually isn't bad on its own merits. First, you have to accept that it's cel shaded. The graphics are a little cartooney. They did this on purpose, and if you don't like being immersed in a dirty, swear-filled comic book, you might not take to this game. However, those who enjoy anime, manga and an alternate view of reality will appreciate the more-than-human powers you have here. You're an enhanced human in a future where three criminal gangs have taken over the world. You get the traditional types of enemies - a wisened old Chinese guy, a Hispanic drug lord and a Soviet mob boss. You get a variety of cars to jump into, a variety of weapons to shoot, and a fairly large world to roam around in. There are tunnels below the ground, places to jump across roofs, places that you can leap cars across, and much more. As you do things, you gain experience and better skills, meaning you can now shoot better or jump higher. This gives you incentive to build up your talents to get to those just out of reach areas. The game is pretty lenient - if you hide out for a while, your armor regenerates as does your health. When you die, they just give you another clone of yourself to keep playing with. You activate teleport spots around the world so you can get to places quickly. The soundtrack is reasonably good - there's a lot of variety here to choose from. The in-game sounds of local Hispanics chatting at you in Spanish, or the high pitched screams of scared civilians, all seem to fit in resaonably well with your cartoon environment. Graphics are, as mentioned, cel shaded. I enjoy cel shading and found it an interesting take on the GTA world. The HUD is esay to understand - it's clear what part of the body you're targeting and what is near you on the map. You get a mix of Kingdom Hearts orb-collecting with Vice City night clubs, Scarface swearing, and a bit of do-gooding in there, too. Assuming of course that you actually go after the bad guys rather than driving over the civilians. So where does that leave you? You're not getting top-drama and acting as in The Godfather. The cel shading might annoy some people. But really, for a fun jumping, shooting, roaming-the-world game, this is really quite fun.
