Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Before Age of Empires 2 there was Age of Empires, which still stands as one of the most popular real-time strategy games of all time. Set in ancient instead of feudal times, Age of Empires lets players guide one of a dozen civilizations with various strengths and weaknesses through a variety of campaigns and single scenarios.

The civilizations are diverse, running the gamut from the Assyrians to the Persians to the Yamato, and each can be played from its Stone Age roots to the epoch of its greatest achievements. This is one of the few games in this genre that lets players choose either an aggressive path or a more peaceful defensive course of action, as it is possible to win many games by defending your border and building an expensive Wonder of the World.

Overall, the game's graphics are very good, but special mention must be made of the animations. At last, horses move like horses, elephants move like elephants, and even the sight of a villager chopping wood looks realistic. Battles can get a little out of hand since the game lacks military formation controls, but they are a sight to behold nonetheless.

Should you tire of the single-player challenges, Age of Empires is still very popular online. It isn't hard to join a multiplayer game at nearly any time of day. Be sure to grab the latest patch, which lets you build many more units and is necessary for playing online. Even if you already have Age of Empires 2, don't miss out on the game that started it all. --T. Byrl Baker

3.0 out of 5 stars Dated but worth a shot 11 Nov 2005
A game of it's time. This is for all the hard core AoE plaers out there who want to see the beginning of the series. Alternatively if you have a system below the specs for AoE 2 then this is a good way to begin. Simple but innovative at the time this game has lead to hundreds of similar games.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best games..EVER! 16 Dec 2002

This game is amazing right from the start. As soon as you play your first deathmatch of random map you know this is good. Age of empires gives you a huge amount of freedom, there are many ways to win the game which make it even better. However some civilisations are a lot more powerful than others

This is a brilliant game combining the war elements of command and conqueor and the economic elements of the settlers this game is not to be missed. But for those of you with a little extra money to spare go buy Age of empires(AOE) 2 it vastly improves on the original and gives better graphics more troops more buildings, basically more EVERYTHING

5.0 out of 5 stars Age of Empires 2: The Age of Kings 29 Jan 2001
By A Customer
I thought that this game was thrilling from the start. It kept you hanging on the edge of your seat when an allie turned on you our when your armie was being killed by your enemie. The most thrilling part is the map Editor as you can make it fair or so you get killed the first time they see you. The enemie ships coming over to destroy you.this game is the best of all the age of empires games.
