Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

AutoRoute 2004 may not be without imperfections, but it is among the best route-planning software for the PC. It has a polished interface that lets you plot routes easily. A smart search engine enables you to find places, postcodes, partial addresses, points of interest and near matches. You can then easily set waypoints and have AutoRoute automatically calculate the best route for you, along with providing time of journey and cost of petrol. It will take account of what speeds you drive at, how long you like to drive without a break, how many miles per gallon you typically get and the price of your petrol. You can also set preferred journey types, based on time, distance or preferred roads. This latter option enables you to set weighting to different road types, so for example, you can specify that you don't like driving on motorways. You then have a visual representation of the route accompanied by a list of written directions, which are easy to print out or e-mail.

The usefulness of any route-planning software is determined by the quality of its map data and this is where AutoRoute manages to both impress and distress in equal measures, depending on where across Europe you look. There is a huge amount of information packed into the software, with 2.5 million miles of routable roads plus details on 128,000 restaurants and 33,000 cash machines to name just a few highlights. Take a look at England, Germany or France, for example, and you find incredible levels of detail in the maps with very high accuracy, but other locations in Europe get far less detailed treatment, to the point that route mapping is largely impossible. Eastern Europe is particularly poorly served, as is Ireland.

For those with a previous version of AutoRoute, there are some good reasons to upgrade, depending on how they use the software. For those who would like to use the included GPS features, it's definitely worth upgrading as the satellite updates are now every second, as opposed to once every 15 seconds; this makes a huge difference in practical terms. Other new features include the ability see one-way streets at a glance and the ability to plot zones from a given point to areas you can reach within a given amount of time. There has also been a lot of work done in improving the maps and adding even more points of interest.

AutoRoute 2004 is a fine piece of software, with some excellent map detail, compounded by equally poor detail in other parts of Europe. It would be wise to check the features list for countries best served before making the decision to buy. --Heather Wilson

2.0 out of 5 stars Microsoft Autoroute 2004 - Major New Roads Missing!!!, 11 Jan 2004
This review is from: AutoRoute 2004 (CD-ROM)
I have just upgraded from Autoroute 2001 to Autoroute 2004 in order to get the benefit of new road information not included in my previous version.

To my astonoishment, on installing Autoroute 2004, I found that most of the roads I was hoping would now be included were not there. This included the new M6 toll (yes, the one that has been under construction for the last 3 years and opened at the end of 2003!!) and a number of significant new road and residential developments in my local area. There is a small amount of additional information and more post codes found that were not previously but not worth upgrading for. The look and feel of the software is almost identical to Autoroute 2001 (and presumably 2002 & 2003) with no significant change of functionality other than some new GPS related gizmo's I don't use.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not really 2004 more like 2002½, 4 Feb 2004
This review is from: AutoRoute 2004 (CD-ROM)
Having waited to upgrade since 2002 with some major new road developments I was very disappointed to find that not only had two upgrades to the A6 in the Midlands not been included which opened in Q4 of 2003 but that the link between the M1 and the M40 in Northamptonshire was not fully included which opened in Q3 of 2002!
Others have noted that the M6 Toll isnot included but as this opened after the publication date of September 2003 thi8s is forgivable. The otehr ommisions are not. Don't buy it if you want the most up to date mapping. Only buy it if you have routing software that is 2000 or older as this it the only age at which you will really benefit.
Aside form this the usual features of all the attractions and address finding etc is ecellent and the ability to integrate with other Office products is also useful.

2.0 out of 5 stars Microsoft Please Listen!!!!, 21 Jan 2004
This review is from: AutoRoute 2004 (CD-ROM)
I have heard these comments on many occasions and even made them to MS myself. They do not even reply. As has already been mentioned WHY is there no M6 relief road and the thing that concerns me is what other roads are missing. I know of one bypass that was FINISHED three years ago and it is still not on it. I would prefer to pay a bit more than have something that is not up to date - it is after all AutoRoute 2004 - I feel it is just an excuse to get money every year. Why is it not possible to download updated roads and details?

Gripe over.
