Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Office Excel 2003 is a superb tool for working with figures. Once your data is in Excel, it is easy to perform calculations, analyse results and create charts and reports. An Excel formula can use any of hundreds of functions, covering statistics, finance, mathematics, engineering and database access. Fire up the chart wizard, and you can present data in one of hundreds of chart types, or create your own customised chart. Another important feature is what-if analysis. You can create scenarios using different assumptions, and switch between them to discover how they impact other figures, or use the Solver tool to discover what values you need to input to achieve a desired result. Pivot charts and pivot tables let you view the same data in many different ways, for example viewing sales by region, by salesperson, by quarter, or by product category. Office Excel 2003 can also be used as a development platform. It includes Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) and almost every part of Excel can be manipulated programmatically, either from VBA or from external applications.

Office Excel 2003 includes a new object called a List. Somewhat like a spreadsheet within a spreadsheet, a List has its own headings and data which you can manage, update and share independent of other data in the worksheet. Another new feature is Information Rights Management, which lets you restrict access to specified individuals, allowing either full control or read-only viewing. It must be used with care, since it requires a Rights Management Server and recipients need either Excel or an Excel viewer, but could be useful for sensitive data. Office Excel 2003 also has much improved XML support, enabling data to be structured according to a custom schema, or parsed and modified by any external application that can work with XML.

Spreadsheets are phenomenally useful, and Office Excel 2003 is a mature product that has the lion's share of the market. It is at the heart of Microsoft's Office suite, and benefits from the familiar Office appearance as well as shared tools like spell checking and drawing. --Tim Anderson

Very impressed! 17 Feb 2004
I have just upgraded to this version using Microsoft Works 6.0. I never used the spreadsheet in Works because it does not have the functions of Excel. And what an improvment Excel 2003 is. It not only looks better but helps you to use a spreadsheet better. You now have a 'Research Pane' where you can access online references without having to leave your spreadsheet. You can also incorporate XML data and compare other spreadsheets with a 'side by side view' function. This new version has helped me understand Excel much better than i did, as the last time i used it was in 1996 and up until now i was scared off from it!

stick with excel 2003 6 Mar 2007
By Dave - Published on Amazon.com
I love excel and have run excel 2003 for years - but I sure don't like excel 2007 - the menus are busy, over-developed and non intuitive - and you can't modify them back to the "classic" look and feel - what a step backward - I'm throwing away the money I put into buying 2007 and getting 2003 back - it's a super program, but 2007 is a real step backwards interface and useability wise. Buy 2003 if you have the chance - it might be forced out sometime - then I go to a mac running XP and I'll stay non upgraded.

When Will They Lower The Price? 9 Jan 2007
By asfhgwt - Published on Amazon.com
Essentially, we were forced to purchase this upgrade to fix some problems with complex, macro-laden spreadsheets. It worked, but IMHO the price of this three-year-old software is too high. Every other similar product's price gets lower over time, but not Microsoft's products. I don't know why some other company doesn't copy their original formula, namely, creating similar software at a lower price that reads (and co-opts) the competiton's datafiles.
Things go down hill after this version 24 Dec 2011

For me, this is the last uncluttered version of Excel. I made them uninstall Excel 2007 at work and put this version back. I am an expert Excel user and VBA programmer and don't appreciate having to dig through all of the new choices in new menus to get where I used to go with one keystroke. Why can't Microsoft make things simple like Apple?
