2.0 out of 5 stars A Printed and Bound Help Menu 30 Jun 2012
By Pete B.
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
If you are after a straightforward introductory 'how-to' book that takes you through Outlook's various setting and menus, then Step By Step could be for you. Equally, if you are wedded to doing follow-me exercises then this book is definitely for you. The author's style is clear and readable and, (apart from the tacky front cover), the layout is straightforward and pleasant on the eye. And that's basically it. It's a Help menu, only printed and bound.

And there's the rub. If you want more bang for your buck, if you want a book that explores and gets under the hood, that adds interesting little quirks and has an opinion, this book is definitely NOT for you. Given that most people coming to an all-bells-and-whistles high-end suite like Office already have some knowledge of email applications and probably have a stack of email already, (either in Entourage or Apple's Mail programme), waiting to make the jump to Outlook, it's puzzling to know just who this book is aimed at. The book wants you to download additional files to compliment its exercises, yet I wonder how many people have the time for this or want to clutter up Outlook with additional files, preferring a book that is a ready-reference, with tips and words of wisdom from a knowledgeable author on the various pitfalls of making the transition from a different email application.

It's a Microsoft publication, so you could say that they are to be congratulated for commissioning a physically printed manual in an age where most software makers don't bother, yet the best 'How-to' books have moved on. Nowadays the good ones, (David Pogue's Missing Manual series comes to mind), are stacked with additional or allied topics that demonstrate the author's passion for the subject. Want to know about importing all those legacy emails?

4.0 out of 5 stars Great in-depth training on Outlook 2011 31 July 2011
By D. Greenbaum - Published on
The joke has always been you can't spell Entourage without "rage" and Microsoft finally retired that product and re-introduced Outlook for the Mac, which hasn't been around since the classic days! This book is a great overview of all the features of the product including both beginner and intermediate concepts.

The Step by Step series is a lesson-based training program, but you can easily avoid the actual lessons in order to use the book as a reference guide. In this case the actual training exercises are pretty minimal and could have easily been omitted and still retain the book's value.

The book is extremely well-laid out with a great table of contents and index. Each chapter introduces the concepts it covers and the key points and then reviews them at the end. For users of an Exchange server, the lessons cover both Exchange-based accounts as well as traditional IMAP/POP email systems. Users new to Microsoft products as well as seasoned Entourage and Outlook for the PC users will still find the book's lessons accessible and of value. If you already know a concept, the book makes it very easy to skip that section.

Unfortunately since the book was printed, Microsoft made significant changes to the sync functions and now that Apple is retiring MobileMe, these sections will be subject to additional changes. Such is the nature of tech books.

Pros: Easy to understand lessons and comprehensive review of features
Cons: Lessons not terribly substantive

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Ebook experience 18 Mar 2012
By Amazon Customer - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is not a content review, but a review of the kindle edition for those who use this method more and more. (The content of the 'Step by Step' series is just fine for those wanting to learn the core of a software program by using hands on exercises throughout the book).
I hesitated on other computer ebooks because of the complaints about the screenshots being too small and hard to read etc. For this book--and I assume for other new releases of 'Step by Step' books--the Ebook was very good. Screenshots were big enough to see, and the practice files were easy to download from the publishers web site. I use a 10' IPad which I just set up next to my computer which has the software I'm learning. I can't speak for how this would work on a 7' tablet.
The Ebook editions for these types of books are generally less expensive, as they should be, and I hope other publishers will work to create Ebook versions that are as good or better than their print versions.
Hats off to the 'Step by Step' publishers for being ahead of the curve.
