I am a little old fashioned in my gaming and actually like CFS2 a lot, its has been out for years but works a treat on Vista (32 bit anyhow) and if you look there are plenty of extras to download for free. But figuring out how to fly everything well takes a lot of trial and error and figuring out some of the mission and campaign stuff has been quite frustrating at times as the help is not very 'helpful'

The book is a revelation, I have the CFS3 book by Sibex (but not CFS3) and it is both useful and well produced, whereas a lot of the Sibex books are, at best, just the same as the game help but in print form. This CFS2 book is similar in style to Sibex CFS3 (ie mostly B&W and in style of the help files) but appears to be a Microsoft publication and is HUGE. Well over 300 pages and much thicker than my other flight sim books and really packed with useful and interesting stuff - a for instance on p180-182 about the Wildcat (my main combat plane right now) it gives you recommended climb speed/rate, fuel consumptions at various throttles and all the landing details you need (including you can set full flaps above 130mph but they wont drop fully until you slow down, despite the sign in the cockpit) as well as suitable combat tactics and all manner of other stuff. There are also 2 big chapters on combat flight tactics and enough info for me to consider building my own missions for a laugh

It has surpassed Sibex CFS3 as my main source of combat flying info. Since CFS2 is surely a classic/retro game of the future I am very happy to have got a copy of the book to go with it. Any relative novice to combat flight simulation will learn plenty of tactical stuff from this (but I guess you might find it on the web these days), even if they havent got CFS2 - but they might want to buy a copy of the game once they have the book

Good graphics and concise writing are key to the quality of this book. The author's knowledge of flying and aerodynamics is obvious. He knows how to teach; his explanations are smart and clear. Excellent reference for anyone who wants to maximize their use of this game.

Shootum up! 3 Jan 2007
By Jerry M. Skaggs - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is my favorite Combat Flight Sim. Considering the graphics technology when this sim was introduced, it is excellent. Scenery is accurate. Aircraft are a little "fuzzy"looking. The ships and carriers need to look more realistic. Combat is fun. In the manual, advice on how to handle dogfights is given by fighter Ace Joe Foss and a few Japenese pilots of the time. Flying this sim enticed me to read Greg "Pappy" Boyingtons book, THE BLACK SHEEP. Carrier landings are challenging. It's a good sim, buy it.
