Product Description

Product Description

The author of Generation X turns his dispassionate eye to the hothouse world of software development and geek culture in the scramble for love and success in a brave new world. A funny, but surprisingly poignant, look at life in the age of the computer; cyber-romance, virtual reality, individuality and the corporate straitjacket.

From the Back Cover

‘'My name is Daniel U. I am a bug tester at Microsoft. Lately I've been unable to sleep…'’

Microserfs: a hilarious, fanatically detailed, and oddly moving audiobook about a handful of misfit Microsoft employees who realise they don't have a life and who subsequently become determined to get lives inside the lightning-paced world of high-tech, 1990's American geek culture. Coupland's quirky ensemble "stick a piece of dynamite inside themselves, like a cartoon cat, in the hope that when they reassemble their exploded pieces they will be somebody different."

Coupland gives listeners an intimate, deadly accurate, and very funny view of a way of life that is quickly becoming the dominant way of life: friends, families, and lovers falling through the trap doors of the new electronic order and involved in an engaging, awkward scramble toward love and success in a brave new world.

Very well done. 27 April 2000

This is not my favourite Coupland, but it's not my least favourite. Somewhere in the middle, then. Which makes it pretty good. I think the story suits Matthew Perry's narration very well. His perky, quirky, clever-nerdy tone is nice to listen to, emphasising the bouncy lightness of the novel. . .

Microserfs is the best audiobook of all time! 22 July 2010
By Choconut - Published on Amazon.com
This was the first audiobook I bought and it's still my favorite. I had read the book and was intrigued when I saw that Matthew Perry was reading the audio version. I bought it and listened to the cassette tapes on my drive up to Whistler and finished it on the drive down. Loved it! It is witty, charming and made me and everyone else in the car laugh out loud.

I wish they would release a CD version. Until then, I am hanging on to my original cassette tapes!
Like computer software one bug in this recording spoiled the whole thing. 21 Jun 2010
By Bret Pettichord - Published on Amazon.com
In the second half of the book, the characters relocate to Silicon Valley. They make many comments about it. Sadly, I was unable to listen to this because Matthew Perry consistently says "Silicone Valley" instead, which is something else entirely. As a consequence, I abandoned the book.
