5.0 out of 5 stars Cheap and cheerful, 30 Jan 2008
A good little light to have next to the computer etc, I suffer from SAD quite badly and this lamp really helped. I would recommend this as a good entry level light box.

Also a note about the company's customer service.

The light was bought for me for christmas and the original light delivered with a crack in the casing. After contacting them they sent a courier to pick up the broken one and sent another out on the same day. They also double checked that the replacement was ok before sending it. So thumbs up to their customer service for putting things right.

4.0 out of 5 stars Important technical information, 19 Nov 2008

    (REAL NAME)
One piece of information which I would have found helpful when making this purchase is that the therapy time is quoted in the instructions as one hour with your eyes at 20cm from the lamp, or 2 hours at 50cm. 20cm isn't really practical so realistically you need to sit in front of this lamp for 2 hours a day for it to make a difference. You can read or use a computer at the same time though.

It uses the same type of 36 watt fluorescent double tube lamps as more expensive models, such as the £200+ Diamond 4 High Powered Lightbox for Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) - Preferred by health professionals such as doctors and psychiatrists - with FREE Aromotherapy Oil! or the Lumie Pharos Regular, which quote therapy times of less than one hour. The difference is that this product has only two of these bulbs rather than 4, so it's probably about half as bright -- but it's considerably less than half the price so for the price conscious it might actually be worth buying two of these rather than one of the more expensive models. The difference is probably just because this product is made by a domestic lighting company with lower overheads than a specialised therapeutic lighting firm. (given that spare bulbs and starters for these things are quite cheap, you have to wonder what exactly you're paying for with those products)

Unfortunately it is hard to know whether it is exactly half the brightness as the manufacturer quotes the brightness in lux rather than lumens. A measurement in lux is meaningless unless you also specify the distance from the light source, so one should be wary of such figures. Lumens measure the total light output from the lamp, so that figure would have been more helpful.

Some other minor points: it takes about 3 minutes to reach its full brightness; it emits a quiet humming noise and flickers very slightly in one small area when in use (personally I don't find it too irritating); the construction is basic but solid enough; but if you have to open it up to change the starters or bulbs (spares are available for around £5, though not from Amazon) then be prepared for a task of extreme manual dexterity to get it back together again.

In short, it's a basic product that has its flaws, but it does the same job as much more expensive models for a much lower price.
