Microelectronic Circuit Design is known for being a technically excellent text. The new edition has been revised to make the material more motivating and accessible to students while retaining a student-friendly approach. Jaeger has added more pedagogy and an emphaisis on design through the use of design examples and design notes. A Problem Solving approach teaches students how to work through problems step by step. This methodology is introduced in the opening chapter and used in all of the worked examples.

New design highlights examples, design information and problem solving strategy, making the text easier to use for both students and instructors.

Modular approach: Digital circuits are covered before analog circuits, giving the text a modern feel, but the two parts are not dependent, so it is easy for professors to cover the material in the order that they choose.
Examples: Additional examples, including new design examples have been added and are followed by matched exercises. These make it easier for students to learn and practice the material.
"Electronics in Action" boxes present real life applications so that students can see the connection between what they are learning and how it can be practically used.

Computer tools are used for problem solving throughout the text, including Electronics Workbench, which allows students to simulate circuit design.
In this edition, some of the long equation derivations have been moved to the web, making the text less mathematically complex. Yet students can still access them online.

This is a great book for beginning electrical engineers. I was able to move through the course smoothly without any problems.

Jaeger includes an incredible amount of material in this book, but he fails to organize it in a meaningful manner. Most of the sections of the book were disjoint and never related to each other, which confuses the beginning engineer.

These reviews certainly demonstrate that everyone has a different point of view. I thought Jaeger's organization was excellent. Jaeger leads you through the material in a user friendly, step by step manner. He provides what I think is the best explanation of pn junction physics. Jaeger takes the space needed to explain fully. Compared to Jaeger,Sedra and Smith race through the material providing few intermediate examples. I think Jaeger TEACHES and Sedra and Smith seem to be summarizing for the benefit of someone who has learned elsewhere.

If you really want to learn the structure and principles of function of the different types of electronic components, this is the perfect book for you.
The theory is too easy to understand and it has a lot of exercises and problems with different dificulty levels.
You can use this textbook in different courses, like: Analog Circuits, Electronic Circuit Design,and electronic physics.

Difficult book to understand 28 Sept. 2008

It could possibly be my personal intelligence level, but this was a very difficult book for me to understand. It was required for my Electronics I class, so I didn't have much of a choice. Luckily I saved some money on this book by buying it used on here, so that made me feel a bit better about me not understanding the book. Not one I would personally recommend, but if you don't have a choice, go for it.
