5.0 out of 5 stars A perfect course, 8 Dec 2007
By Alexey Gusev (Moscow, Russia) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
It's a perfect solution for the study of undergraduate course. Nicholson's book comprises all of common topics in intermediate (and advanced level in some sections) microeconomics. The advantage of this book is not only a comprehensive and clear introduction to modern course, but good impact in extensions that suggest further discussions on more conmplicated problems and give the best link to the further reading. The examples of practice are very well inplemented and give the view on problems solving in a clear way. Though Economics of Information and Uncertainty and Riskand other chapters are well explained, the book just omits or does not pay enough attention to some problems connected with the input markets and some other. But that cannot reduce Microeconomic Theory's value.

The Book is not bad, bad i wouldnt say it is the best for Microeconomics, its not written in the best and easiest way for one to understand all concepts straightaway.

2.0 out of 5 stars there are better, 20 Feb 2009
By Richard Almasi "TheHunn" (Europa) - See all my reviews

If you just want to read about microeconomics, this book is just OK.

> the material is presented in a "clean" manner; the pages are not cluttered with graph upon graph, it's all very "slick"
> the topics are explained very clearly as well, I never had any problems understanding the concepts

The problem is with the mathematical and analytical coverage; if you don't remember the math from your first-year mathematical economics course you can't do the exercises in this book: this book will (!) assume that you know it, it does not give you leniency.

Worse still, most of the exercises are far more difficult than what the chapter presented: they test you on things that the chapter either did not present or did not provide enough theoretical material for !

There are much better books on microeconomics out there than this one, and given those alternatives there's no good reason to buy this book !

Personally, I think that these books are much better than Nicholson:

Varian's book Intermediate Microeconomics: A Modern Approach, focuses on building intuitive skills.

Salvatore's book Microeconomics: Theory and Applications, focuses on very detailed analysis of graphs.

Else's book Principles of Microeconomics, this is my personal favorite, focuses on explaining the theories, as opposed to graphs and maths.
