Product Description

Review

'Microbes and Man is certainly a classic of English literature as well as microbiology. Buy it or give it as a present.' Meriel Jones, Microbiology Today

'… well written throughout with a clear lucid style … I think this book deserves a place on most bookshelves. All undergraduates would benefit from an understanding of how micro-organisms are critical to man in modern society … the book is a pleasure to dip in to when you have a few spare minutes.' SFAM News

From a previous edition '… a beautifully written introduction to microbiology … Throughout the last decade this book has been one of my favourites. It is a classic, and such splendid material for sixthformers. The non-scientists understand it; the scientists get ideas from it. If there isn't a copy in your school library, don't let another day pass without getting one.' The Biologist

From a previous edition 'In a word this book is a classic.' New Scientist

From a previous edition '… an excellent read for the uninitiated and professional alike.' SGM Quarterly

'This book is highly enjoyable, as it is readable, thought-provoking and at times quietly amusing.' Educational Media

Product Description

Microbes are everywhere. Normally invisible, they are abundant in the air we breathe, in soil, in water, on our skin and hair, in our mouths and intestines, on and in the food we eat. They make the soil fertile; they clean up the environment; they change, often improve, our food; some protect us from less desirable microbes. Yet most people are scarcely aware that they exist - except when they become ill. Microbes, as 'germs', are widely regarded as nasty, unpopular because a few can cause disease and a few can spoil food. Yet collectively microbes present a fascinating world of miniscule creatures, who together encompass all the processes of which terrestrial life is capable: creatures who have profound effects on our lives and surroundings. In this up-dated edition, the extraordinary impact which the microbial community has on our everyday lives is described in an accessible and easy to read style.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very accessible and useful text, 10 May 2004
This review is from: Microbes and Man (Paperback)
As a first-year microbiology undergraduate, I, like many of my peers, did not fully understand the scope of the discipline when I arrived at Leeds University. I was pointed in the direction of this book by my lecturers and demonstrators as my first module was based almost entirely on the book's content.

Postgate manages to cover all of the vital components of this broad and expanding subject in an interesting and accessible manner. His use of scientific language is sensible and ordered, explaining any uncommon phrases, which prevents having to reach for the "Dummy's Dictionary of Science" every five minutes, as is the case with many other texts on the subject.

I found this text an incredibly easy and well-presented of the basics of the subject. It has helped my understanding no end, and i would recommend it to anyone with an interest in any aspect of microbiology, whether for academic purposes or purely for curiosity's sake.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good introduction to microbiology, 4 Nov 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Microbes and Man (Paperback)
Microbes and Man is a good introduction for anyone who is about to study microbiology, as it covers all the main aspects of Microbiology. It is useful for someone who has an interest in how science affects our everyday life. This book was able to teach the reader microbiology without them realising, the theory is put simply so that anyone new to the subject can understand. There is no prior knowledge to science required. An area that I found most interesting was the section on 'Microbes in society,' This chapter dealt with how microbes affects our everyday life which is something we take for granted. For example in the The London Underground. The last chapter dealt with the author's thoughts on microbes in the future. This proved to be a thought-provoking chapter. I would thoroughly recommend this book to anyone interested in how biology affects the world around us.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not the match expected, 8 Feb 2012

This review is from: Microbes and Man (Paperback)
I purchased this book as a companion to the BBC documetary of the same name. However, they did not match up but this was not a disappointment.
A quite well-researched book although it could have done with a few more illustrations. Also, a bit heavy as an introduction to microbiology.
