Product Description

Product Description

Based on the popular trading card format, each deck contains 103 color-coded cards that are organized into five groups: gram-positive bacteria, gram-negative bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. The front of each card displays a unique and focused collection of microscopic and clinical images and the back of the card contains a standardized summary of six key features, including diseases caused, pathogenesis, immunity, epidemiology, diagnosis, and control. There's also an outline of the human body with red markings that show at a glance where the organisms cause disease. Unlike textbook chapters, where authors emphasize different points, the information provided on MicrobeCards is standardized. This makes direct comparison between organisms easy. MicrobeCards also offer complete flexibility; the cards can be organized by the student to suit his or her specific needs. MicrobeCards are an excellent reference, allowing users to focus on the most relevant information.

3.0 out of 5 stars Blurry Gram stain pictures, doesn't show important distinction, 17 Nov 2006
By W. Long - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Microbe Cards (Paperback)
Pros: The listed causes of disease, pathogensis, immunity, epidemiology, diagnosis and control might serve as handy notes.

Cons: I bought this thinking the pictures would serve good review/reference for gram stain/morphology identification. But disappointingly, the pictures of the Gram stain (as well as other stain) are blurry. It doesn't show important differences between different species or different genus that looks similar to unexperienced observer. For example it's important to know Neisseira gonorrhoeae Gram stain shapes like kidney beans, but it only shows a small picture of white blood cells with tiny dots of the bacteria.

The picture for colonies on plates are also very small and not clear. It doesn't say what media it is growing on that shows that colony color or morphology.

This can at most only used as a little additional study supplement. For those who just begin to take the class, don't forgot to pay close attention in the lab demonstration.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good reference, 6 Mar 2003
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Microbe Cards (Paperback)
This is a quick important review for microbiology. It is well-organized and easy to read. This study aid also helps to retain information for microbiology class and USLME boards. However, if you really want a great study guide for medical microbiology class and for USLME, study the following book by Patrick Leonardi:
Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers (ISBN: 0971999635), which is sold on amazon. Both books are very helpful. Half of my class used both of these books and everyone got at least an A or B.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great study tool, 10 Mar 2003
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Microbe Cards (Paperback)
This is a great study aid because it helps in retaining information for exams. It does this because it is easy to understand and written in an organized fashion. I also would recommend the following which is also sold on amazon.com:
Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers
by Patrick Leonardi
(ISBN: 0971999635)
The second book was very thorough and showed me the kind of questions to be ready for on my exams in medical microbiology class in my med school. Both proved quite helpful. Both are must buys. In fact, I have a friend in a different med school and she used these same books and also got good grades in her medical microbiology class.
