Product Description

Best known as a former guitarist and contributing member of The Rolling Stones, Mick Taylor has worked with many famous names over his 40 year career, including Jack Bruce and Bob Dylan. The sophisticated jazz- and blues-influenced guitar licks Taylor added to such classic albums as Sticky Fingers (1970) gave the Stones an added dimension they lacked before and after him. He added his famous vibrato effect to the blues lead guitar line on ''Sway'' and handled most of the guitars on the quietly majestic ''Moonlight Mile.'' Perhaps Taylor's best-remembered Stones work was the Santana-like lead guitar in the jam break of the jazzy ''Can't You Hear Me Knocking.'' This live in concert DVD, filmed July 2009 at the famous New Morning Concert in Tokyo, shows Mick Taylor as you've never seen him before. Other Musicians: Max Middleton Piano; Kuma Harada Bass; Denny Newman guitar/vocals; Jeff Allen Drums

I've noticed there have been fairly mixed reviews for this release, and I do respect others views because they do help us decide whether to purchase or not.We are not over blessed with Mick's recordings in recent years, and for me this set recorded in May 2009 was certainly something I looked forward to.Saw him a couple or so years back on a John Mayall tour.Mick has never overplayed but his imput always is worth the price of admission.Look at his imput on the CD/DVD John Mayall 70th Birthday set, pure guitar gold.So to this release, beautifully filmed in HD,sound is excellent throughout. He has a cracking band including Max Middleton on keyboards who was for quite some time with Chris Rea and played on many of his biggest hits. The set itself is full of wonderful music played by a guitarist who I feel has been undervalued for far too long. His technique whether on slide or standard playing is so full of beautiful phrasing and touches that for me as a guitarist was worth the cost of it,his playing is never in your face but laid back,he lets each piece develop as he and the band continue. His version of 'Blind Willie McTell' is just awesome,as his interpretation of for me the best Stones song ever,'No Expectations'.Here you experience Mick's very passable vocal style but some quite wonderful guitar creativeness.
I enjoyed this DVD throughout,he doesn't jump around, but he never did,but is without doubt one of the finest blues/jazz/rock guitarists ever, and enough of this is here to make this release a very worthwhile purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure Joy 28 Sep 2010

Format:DVD
This DVD has restored my interest in Music. I didn't think there was much more of this music to offer and then this comes out.

Stones fan or not, any blues/rock fan will love this.

A great concert, great band and Mick Taylor has got to be one of the best blues guitarists about today.

I never realised he didn't use a pick.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well Worth Watching 25 Dec 2009
Format:DVD
Mick Taylor's 2009 Concert from Tokyo features several tracks from his solo release "A Stone's Throw" and some classic blues covers. The performance is short on theatrics but solid in substance. His playing is solid and focused, and while the band hardly "tears it up" they do a fine job of accompanying this guitar master. This DVD is definitely worth checking out!
