As one would expect 18 May 2009
Format:Paperback
I make a habit of only buying quality travel guides and in all honestly you really couldn't get any better than the Michelin guides. I am collecting quite a decent collection of them, I don't even bother looking at others now.
As the advert on TV says it does what it says on the tin. It gives you all the facts you need, it doesn't overly bother with nice glossy pictures, instead you get well written and objective reviews of the destinations.
If you are going travelling anywhere I would always recommend the Michelin guides they are as the song says 'simply the best'

Frankly this is the worst travel guide we have ever used. Some of the Michelin Guides (we have used others including those for Brittany and the Dordogne) are fairly useful but this one falls a long way short of that. The book is set out in alphabetical order: as one other review says, this is a book covering a very large area and so it would be much more useful if it was split into smaller areas (as the Dordogne guide is, for example). The index is cumbersome, cross referencing within the book is extremely hard to follow, and some of the maps are pretty useless. All of this made the book extremely difficult to use.

The rating system is patchy. Some extremely worthwhile day trips we made only had a passing mention in the book, with no stars. Other items which were given 3 stars were disappointing. By way of example, some religious sites were worth visiting but did not seem to us to merit the full 3 star status and 4 or 5 page description which was given in the book. As the other review says, this book really needs to have a fuller and more objective approach to be worth using.

I would recommend avoiding this book if at all possible.

OK if you already know the specific town or specific area you want to visit.
Not the best maps or if you want a more general 'things to do'. 'Things to see', 'Cycle routes' in this general area.
We stayed Clairvaux les lac.

GREEN GUIDE
Follows the age old format of the Green Guides, once indispensible, now there are many better, but I wouldn't go anywhere in France without one.

A very good guide
This is probably the best guide for this area with good overviews and touring information. Biased, perhaps, to Michellin's own agenda but good reference and covers the basics well. Read more

Disappointing
You either like the style of the Michelin guides or you don't. I found it quite disappointing for several reasons:

1) Burgundy & Jura is a massive area so the book isn't... Read more

How can you not want it?
As good as any of the Michelin Green Guides - you'll want to have a copy on hand when, lucky you, you are touring wine country and the heart of Europe.
