I have been using Green Guides as reference books for planning trips in Europe, and for navigating around the points of interest in towns, since the 60s. I found that the guide books were a totally reliable reference to what should be seen; and I always agreed with the ratings given- 1 star 2 star 3 star. The guides were organised A to Z like an encyclopaedia.
The new edition is organised in regions and also includes hotel and restaurant details. Opening times and days are given. The type face is a bit larger and the number of pages are slightly less. The new edition is also about 1.5 cm smaller in height. To accommodate these differences, in the new edition descriptions are simplified and shortened and the "Excursions" information of the old guide generally does not appear.
While the old guides were possibly a bit verbose, one could easily skip those bits. Anyway, sorry to be an intellectual snob, but I would say the new guide, while it is perfectly adequate, is aimed at the learner tourist... And you can always get far more detailed hotel and restaurant information, together with customer reviews, off the internet.
