Good follow up to Foundation course, but inappropriately titled.,

This course is a good follow up to the foundation course and on the first CD it recaps on some of the exercises from the end of the foundation course, which is useful. What this course teaches you is more of the irregular verbs and how to put verbs into different tenses. It goes into a bit more detail with the tenses, for example, it will tell you the difference between how you would say 'I used to eat chicken' and 'I ate chicken yesterday'. It does not teach you a wide range of vocabulary but it teaches you the structure of the language, which is essentially the most important part of learning a language, as opposed to a lot of phrase books which tell you how to ask a specific question but will not tell you how to understand the answer!One criticism I would have is that it is inappropriately titled. In my opinion, this course is still teaching you how to say very basic sentences and is not what I would consider advanced. I think at the end of this course, there will still be a lot of Portuguese language and expressions that learners will not understand. It is a good follow up to the Foundation Course but just don't expect to be fluent upon completion!

Having completed the Michel Thomas foundation course in Portuguese, and having found it very useful in getting a toe-hold into the language, I was looking forward to extending my knowledge with this set of CDs. But it didn't really get me any further than the foundation course. For a start, there were only 4 CDs, not 8 - and the first 2 of these were simply a revision of the earlier course. So the real "advanced course" consists of only 2 CDs. Not surprisingly, I don't feel that I know any more useful Portuguese now than when I started.And I got increasingly irritated by the course's exclusive reliance on what I call the "painting by numbers" approach - asking you to translate carefully chosen sentences into Portuguese, but never building any of them into even the simplest conversations. A particularly annoying example of this was being told how to ask questions without being given sufficient vocabulary to understand any likely answer. So anyone completing the course can ask "What time will he arrive?" in Portuguese, but since the course doesn't cover telling the time - in fact it doesn't even tell you how to count to ten - this seems pretty pointless to me. Surely there are better ways of learning a language this!
