"A genuine breakthrough in teaching Mandarin"
(The Guardian )Moving along at a relaxed, slow pace, punctuated by amusing anecdotes and jokes from the teacher, the new words, phrases and language rules are gently introduced and reinforced through subtle repetition without ever being tedious. In fact, despite a distinct emphasis on non-work, the course proves very effective and enjoyable, and its format is ideal for learning anywhere you like. So, if you only want to learn to speak the language, this course is highly recommended.
(Top Real Travel Product, Real Travel )"Excellent for learning ... This entirely audio course is easy to use and quickly results in some useful ability in the new language. Great for the car."
(Adventure Travel )Learn another language the way you learnt your own
You learnt your own language naturally and enjoyably: now you can learn Mandarin Chinese in the same way.
You'll stick with it because you'll love it
· Use the unique method perfected over fifty years by the celebrated psychologist and linguist Michel Thomas.
· This method works with your brain, helping you to build up your Mandarin Chinese in manageable, enjoyable steps by thinking out the answers for yourself.
· You learn through listening and speaking - without the pressure of writing or memorising.
· You pick up the language naturally and unforgettably.
This much-anticipated Vocabulary Course carries forward the Michel Thomas teaching tradition and faithfully follows his unique approach to foreign language learning.
The essential format is the same all-audio, building-block approach. The teacher and native-speaker assistant instruct two students in the recording studio in real time and the student at home becomes the third member of the class.
Learning vocabulary is notoriously difficult if attempted in the traditional way - with long lists and hours of memorisation. However, with the Michel Thomas Method, new words and phrases are presented in such a way that they cannot be forgotten. They are interwoven with what has gone before so they are imprinted in your knowledge bank for ever.
The vocabulary in the courses is carefully chosen from a relatively small number of 'power words' which open up an amazing range of expression and comprehension.
Building and expanding on the language structures taught in the Foundation and Advanced Courses, these new Vocabulary Courses give you all you need to enjoy travelling in the Mandarin Chinese-speaking world, be it for business or pleasure.

Michel Thomas then Pimsleur is a good sequence,

When I got the email from Amazon asking me to rate the Michel Thomas vocabulary course, I wondered what could I tell someone who was considering buying the third course in the Michel Thomas series. The course is brilliant, as you know. I decided that I should tell you that I'm finding the Pimsleur course to be the perfect next step in learning the language. I'm working on Pimsleur 1 now. It's the perfect course to work on developing skill in speaking at regular speed. I have no clue how you could use Pimsleur without using the Michel Thomas course first because Pimsleur is completely inadequate when it comes to instruction about the tones. Fortunately, I learned this through reading reviews like this one and started with Michel Thomas. As I mentioned, I'm using Pimsleur 1 now after the Michel Thomas series and I'm finding it very useful. The reinforcement of practice at speaking speed is great. There's a little new vocabulary in Pimsleur I so I recommend starting there. Good luck. I have used Pimsleur French and now I have Pimsleur Mandarin so I'm a fan of Pimsleur too.

This review is from: Michel Thomas Method: Mandarin Chinese Vocabulary Course (Michel Thomas Series) (Audio CD)
Like others in the Michel Thomas Mandarin Chinese series, this course builds associations between mandarin chinese tones and colours, and uses mnemonic stories to make learning new vocabulary pretty easy. It helps that the authors (Harold Goodman and native speaker Jingtao Deng) keep coming back to previously learnt words and phrase constructions so they stick with you through repeated use. They teach a core range of extremely useful words and phrases, and by the end of these 4 discs you'll be able to confidently make yourself understood in Mandarin in everyday situations - though being able to understand spoken Chinese of more than basic complexity will take further study. The emphasis here is rightly on quality not quantity of vocabulary learning, so you don't feel overwhelmed and what is learnt, stays learnt. Highly recommended.
