All-audio 'Advanced' Japanese course,
By
This review is from: Michel Thomas Method: Japanese Advanced Course (Michel Thomas Series) (Audio CD)
I have both the Foundation and Advanced courses and consider them both money well spent. The Foundation course is perhaps more carefully put together at the editing stage and I would score it 5/5. 'Advanced' is a misnomer: it does indeed build on the Foundation with many important and useful structures, but the vocabulary taught is extremely limited and alone won't get your very far in conversation if you go to Japan. Whether this is 'pure' Michel Thomas method or not is irrelevant. It is well-structured and probably the most effective audio course I have used in many years of language learning. True, the concept of using recorded 'live' lessons means there are irritations when the lessons are worked through many times. But dont let this put you off. Yes, the explanations of mistakes are frequent and laborious, but for most people repetition is the key to language acquisition. It is the only audio course I have ever had that truly works without a book (I only listen in the car or while walking). The cost is little more that that of a single private lesson. So if you are serious about learning the language dont be put off by the negative comments. It is well worth it.

botched editing,

The material they recorded for this advanced Japanese course has obviously been tightly edited to fit as much onto 4 CDs as possible (the foundation course felt more evenly paced). As a result there are some errors where the wrong answers were used. I noticed it when "I read while I ate" and "I ate while I read" were swapped around. It's a credit to the teachers and the Thomas method that I noticed these, but who knows what mistakes I missed?

Starts easy - gets complex pretty quickly,

Firstly I have lived in Japan for 1 year and I wish this was around before I went - my Japanese would have been far better and I would have enjoyed my time there more. I had 2 weeks of intense personal tutition before I left - this CD does a great job in 8 hours!Unlike the French Michel Thomas CDs, this doesnt give you a large working vocabulary by pointing out the similarities with English. There arent that many similarities between English and Japanese but Japanese has absorbed a large number of English words which I think the CD could have covered more - I'm upto disk 7 at the moment and I would guess only about 100 words are being used. The real strong point of this course is that it does an excellent job of explaining the grammar - I have learnt a lot and it has corrected some misunderstandings I had or generalised rules I already knew so I have found it an eye-opener. I listen to it in the car and can follow-it whilst driving. I've got loads of other Japanese courses on tape/CD - none of them can be used in the car in the same way - they all rely on refering to books. The aspects of the Michel Thomas method that it is using are: - Introduce a concept and reptetitively explore the concept - Build on what you have learnt By disk 7 it is covering some pretty long and complex sentences where I'm feeling challenged, so I'm impressed with it. Only criticism is that it could have introduced more English origin words.
