Book Description

6 May 2004
This is the autobiography of Michael Watson, the former Commonwealth Middleweight champion, whose career was tragically cut short. In 1991 he had a world title fight with Chris Eubank - the people's champion against the guy we love to hate. Eubank retained his belt, but it was one of the most controversial decisions in British boxing history. The Rematch was the biggest super middleweight title fight British boxing had ever seen. Tragically, in the eleventh round, Watson caught his neck on the back of the ropes after taking an uppercut from Eubank. He collapsed and suffered serious brain damage which left him paralysed. After years of intensive therapy, and with the same determination and strength of spirit that he showed in the ring, Michael Watson has made a remarkable recovery and won the biggest fight of all - the fight for his life. Michael Watson was, is, and always will be the People's Champion.

The story of Michael Watson is a well documented one. Left for dead after a brutal fight against Chris Eubank - not to mention the errors of the British Boxing Board of Control - Watson embarked on an incredible rehabilitation process which defied medical science. Reading this book is a humbling experience as you encounter Watson's dignity, faith and courage with every turn of a new page. Michael Watson is an inspitational man and this book is essential reading for anyone interested in the inextinguishable flame of the human spirit.

4.0 out of 5 stars Michael Watson 23 May 2004
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
The delayed biography of Michael Watson, was well worth the wait.
An inspirational read of how someone can overcome great diffulties and not be bitter about your fate.
The first half of the book covers his childhood and his boxing career, while the second half details his battle to recover from the terrible injuries substained in his second battle with Chris Eubank.

It is a good read not only for those who know his life story but for people who aren't interested in boxing, just to learn how a strong mind coupled with determination can overcome whatever life puts in front of you.

It's very inspiring to read how someone can overcome such a tragedy and make the best of his situation by staying positive, keep faith, and fight on step by step. This not a book for fight fans only but for everyone who wants to read an amazing story. Michael Watson has made a deep impression on me, i have a lot of respect for this man.

I remember the fight, I remembered a lot of his fights and I remembered the London Marathon too.

This book takes you through the highs and lows of a very special man with no hint of malice or bitterness in his body. I wonder how he fared so well in such a brutal sport. The chapters detailing his efforts during those long days pounding the london streets brought a tear to my eyes and several lumps in my throat. Inspirational one reviewer wrote... I couldn't agree more.

This is the second copy of this book i've purchased, I mislaid the original while doing a clearout. This is a brillant read for everyone, not just for boxing fans. Detailing his childhood and his rise from prospect to a champion, during what was a celebrated period for british boxing - the years of the classic encounters between himself, Nigel Benn and Chris Eubank. As a teenager then, these were the fights that got me interested into boxing.

Then from the highs of a succcessful career to the lows, as the tragic events of his second encounter with Eubank are then covered in extensive detail. How the injuries he received, ended his career and nearly left him on the brink of premature death.

It may seem depressing but as you continue to read you sense the spirit and will he had during his career - which made him a champion - was what brought him back from the brink, recover to certain degree from serious injury and become the man he is today. A well respected man within his community and the boxing world. One of the most notable recent achievements covered in this book was his completion of the London Marathon in 2003 - regardless of the disabilities he now has.

It inspiring book to read about a man who triumphed against adversity, and keeps overcoming any hurdles that life may put in front of him. inspiring to us mere mortals.

5.0 out of 5 stars INSPIRATIONAL 12 May 2008
Format:Paperback
I have read lots of books about abused childhoods etc as I love reading true stories. However, I have never read a book that has touched me so deeply. I have not been able to shout up about this book and I have suggested to numerous friends that they should read it. It's the most inspirational book I have ever read. I followed Michael Watson's career and watched all his fights. I remember watching the fight with Eubank and I was in shock, I still have the clippings from the newspapers the following day. Michael is a man to admire, reading what he's been through and the fact that he's not bitter and holds no anger towards anyone just shows the character of the man that so many people have grown to admire. In 1986 my brother went through a similiar thing to Michael due to a car accident and today 22 years on, he's still in a wheelchair. I admire Michael's stength, determination and his strong believe in God.
I would love to meet him and give him a big hug. I'm about to start reading it all over again.
