To help alleviate confusion, the Definitive Edition Volume 1 actually comprises both volume 1 and volume 2 of the original Soulfire volume (volume 1 in this case means "series 1") - and in addition it brings some bonus stories and art not included in the other volumes, so this is a good choice if you want the whole first volume.

With that done, if you've ever read any of Michael Turner's comics you'll know what to expect - especially if you are a fan of Fathom (also highly recommended) as the style is very similar - though whilst Fathom focuses heavily on modern-day watery environments, this is near-future urban sci-fi. The story itself is quite straightforward but nicely executed: Set in the year 2211 a young boy named Malikai finds himself one day being attacked by a winged woman, only to be saved by another called Grace who claims that he has a destiny - to bring magic back to the world. They set about on a journey of discovery trying to stay ahead of a sinister villain and his dragon which are laying waste to entire cities searching for him...

The characterisation is great, which all the characters being believable and different. The story is generally light, with a few darker spots (murder and mass destruction) but typical for the teen+ audience it is aimed at.

Highly recommended.

is hard to ignore.
I honestly do not know how Turner did it, but whenever he took the pencil into his hand something amazing came out of it. Witchblade, Fathom... and Soulfire.
This man was amazing and so is his book. The story around Soulfire is touching, hitting you so deep that you can't stop thinking about it and it hurts to know that there will be never anything like this before.
Michael Turner has set the standard of Graphic Novels to a higher level and many comic books and novels to not reach this standard so easily. Also his unique style in drawing is fantastic.
It is a great vision that has come to life and it should not be ignored. Every Turner fan should have read this piece of work, there is no getting around it.

We do miss you Michael!

Beautiful artwork and character designs! 1 Jun 2012

I have to admit that I had absoulutely no idea what to expect from Soulfire in terms of storyline or writing and purchased this volume in order to get to Turner's superb artwork. If you are looking to collect more of Michael Turner's work or want to get a grasp of his artistic style than this book is a must have. The artwork and character designs are amazing and remain consistent throughout the book. The story seems to be a bit more violent than what I've seen in other works such as Fathom, there's more blood but that just adds more fun to the whole ride. Those who enjoy fantasy or sci-fi will love this book. There is also a quite sizable gallery of cover art and character sketches that those who want this book purely to enjoy the art will no doubt be grateful for. This is a jewel of a book that any casual or serious graphic novel lover will want to have in their collection! Review is by HALEY S., not Becky S.
A delicious, light confection, as light as cotton candy. 4 Dec 2014

What a beautiful volume this is! Great artistry here, held together by a flimsy but fun story. Magic and technology do battle as impossibly beautiful young people fight the evil powers that be. Lead character Grace is the stunningly sexy and beautiful magical creature with dragonfly wings. Her male counterpart is on his epic journey, straight out of the fantasy quest formula, but told in a very fun way.

For me the story at times was a bit formulaic and slow, but the illustrations made up for it.

Extras included in this TP are story development notes, some scripting, and best of all, several pages of alternate covers. These covers are all pin-up style art by a variety of artists, showcasing the lovely Grace and occasionally a minor character or two.

A delicious, light confection, as light as cotton candy.

Love the artwork, love the story. I have been trying to get my hands on a decent copy of this TP, and finally after 3 attempts I have it! mwhahahaha. Anyway, I just started on this series about a month ago starting with volume 4 so finally being able to catch up at least with the first volume is really nice. Would recommend this to a friend.
