Format: Hardcover
Having visited The Gambia twice now, with the intention of travelling there again, we have for a long time been searching for a book that would give an objective, non-tourist, view of The Gambia. Michael Tomkinson achieves just that (although there is also an excellent tourist guide leaflet included with the book); he gives the reader an unbiased and rich insight into what The Gambia is REALLY like, ranging from it's culture, to demography to local customs and beliefs.
Gambia is such a rich and beautiful country. This book, with it's absolutely superb photographic images (it would happily grace any decent coffee table), is the best illustration of that beauty I have ever seen. A cracking book; a good read and a feast for the eyes.

Although the photos in this book are stunning, the text is dire and almost impossible to follow. I feel Michael Tomkinson spends more effort on trying to make us see how clever and articulate he is than on writing to be understood. I wanted to understand something of the history - 20th century is on page 40, followed by 19th century on page 40-41, 21st century on page 46, and then back to 1329 on page 50. Then I tried the section on religion: "Lacking an establishment or articulate apologist, but indigenous-African, tribal-traditional and undoubtedly still widespread, paganism fares badly with official statisticians." If you enjoy 21 words where 6 would have done, you'll enjoy this book, but I gave up with the words and enjoyed the pictures.
