I had never read any books--or even many articles--about REM before, but the band's music has largely been the soundtrack of my life. So, you'd think I'd have really enjoyed this book about REM's enigmatic and charismatic lead singer, Michael Stipe. But no, it was pretty dull. The "biography" was more like a timeline of information gathered from other sources, full of dates and places but not much depth about Stipe himself. In fact, Jovanovic goes out of his way to point out that Stipe is not the penetrating genius we'd all like him to be. Stipe is a mere mortal after all. Yet even with that premise, one might have expected the biography to have contained more emotional and insightful material about why Michael Stipe is who he is. That insight can only come from actually talking with the biography's subject over an extended period of time, and nowhere did I get the impression that Stipe granted Jovanovic any interviews for this book. Jovanovic made a nice book report of Stipe's life, when what readers of this book really want is in-depth explanation and understanding. Jovanovic did a lot of work here, but most people don't read biographies to see a well-organized, researched list of facts and dates.

The book is well presented and written but....the author's style lacks any kind of passion. Maybe this is because he's not a Michael Stipe `fan' (the author has written books on other notable figures) and I get the impression that in writing this book, Michael Stipe or REM isn't a subject he put his heart and soul into. Sorry if that sounds unfair, as I know the effort it takes to create a finished book, but that's how it comes across! Also, with Michael being a rather private character in both his personal life, and (to an extent, especially in past years) as regards the discussion or explanation of his lyrics/REM's music....well, there's maybe not enough to write about really, which is possibly why the print is quite large! Mmm...maybe a leaflet would have been less ambitious....
