In the current economic climate it makes a pleasant change to drive to work with a smile on my face. Bought this re-master and stuck it in the CD player. Not much different, bit meatier if a little dated now in places aka "Armed and Ready" and "Victim of Illusion". The rest sounds great and for those of us old enough it takes you back to 1980. Strange how I still know nearly all the lyrics and air play along nearly note for note to some great lead breaks. Sign of a real rock classic.
Reasons to buy another copy then. There are 5 demos from 1979. This bonus material is interesting and some stuff I've never heard before. Fairly solid if standard rock and roll rhythms produced by Schenker, Deny Carmassi and Billy Sheehan. "Just A Lover" is a tidy demo and with lavish production could of made the cut for an album track; typical chunky and simple, anthemic chord structure. "Looking Out From Nowhere" is a really slower tempo raw demo and makes you realize the amount of work that goes into producing the end result on the album. "Get Up and Get Down" and "Breakout" aren't to special with a raw unknown vocalist Gary Barden who obviously improved no end by the time the first album was released. Worth the asking price just to hear vintage Schenker which is the only strand of sheer class running through the tracks. "After Midnight" was obviously later transformed with revamped lyrics to create "Feels Like A Good Thing". Interesting but as the label says these are only demos.
The other bonus bits consist of "Cry For the Nations", a single version I have on a 12" vinyl with the live B-sides "Armed and Ready" and "Into the Arena" which are both very good and gave an indication of the live stuff to come.
In summary "Cry For The Nations" always signified to me the return of the master and still sounds as good as when I first played it. There is guitar soloing here that makes the spine tingle, the high notes squealing the return of Schenker after a wilderness break. "Tales of Mystery" is still dreamy guitar where less is more and "Lost Horizons" has lost none of its masterpiece status. As the best rock guitar player of this period he should have been huge. Unfortunately a kingdom can't be built on talent alone. Definite five stars.

superb debut 22 Jan 2009

This is a stunning debut from guitar hero schenker,i remember thinking in 1980 when i bought the vinyl that this was his time, how wrong can you be!!! The songs really require no introduction as most rock fans will be familiar with armed and ready, cry for the nations etc and who hasn't bounced around with air guitar too lost horizons?. Back in the day the one dimensional production was always a bugbear and although the remaster has cleaned up the sound - its not quite the improvement i'd hoped for, although class always wins out and this disc is chock full of classic tracks, the bonus demos are really quite poppy and you can see why they never made the original cut apart from looking out from nowhere.all in all this is a worthwhile re issue and the bonus live tracks of armed and ready and into the arena with cozy powell's thundering drums blow the rest of the disc away and show that live this would be a band to reckon with!!! buy and enjoy

This is a fine album Michaels best as a solo artist his playing is great on this, there are many highlights the world was waiting to see what he would do after U.F.O. and the legendary stories of his breakdown hence the idea for the album cover.
Armed and ready the opening track is a ripper,Victim of illusion got an great groove with some fine lyrics,Tales of mystery is a track he had done with U.F.O. as an instrumental on the obsession album, but this time it has got lyrics and sung very well by Gary Barden he was never in the league of Phil Mogg but sing well on the record, fine solo by Michael.
Bijou Pleasurette an instrumental is a absolute peach it is why I love his playing so much you can all most picture sailing down the Rhine the melody is haunting but this is the good news.
The bad news is this remaster is a stinker on Schenker!
The sound is horrendous flat, the drums sound like cardboard boxes, in fact it sounds more like a demo.
Roger Glover original mix on vinyl is fine I don't think Roger would be to please with this dog poo mix sound and god know's what Michael thinks of it?
The artwork is shoddy it fact it is a rip-off don't buy it, get a vinyl copy until they shoot the monkey who engineered this.
Shame because E.M.I. did a great job of the U.F.O. remasters highly recommended, Peter Mew did the remasters at Abbey Road get him in and do the artwork properly we don't want inferior product do it properly or don't do it at all are you listening E.M.I.
