A Great Companion Book to Alice Starmore's Book of Fair Isle Knitting 21 Sep 2010
By BOOK REVIEW - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Well documented pattern charts for Gansey, and Fair Isle sweaters documented by the author direct from the source, traditional knitters from fishing villages around the Scottish and Shetland Isles. There is also a stitch dictionary for cable designs in the back of the book with written directions (not charted with knitting symbols). Beautiful full color photos of the sweaters themselves, and a very large number of B&W photos of the fisherman and women wearing their creations. All of these patterns are classic and will never become dated. Includes a small number of complete patterns for the sweaters and vests themselves:

Mrs. Polson's Pattern (men's vest with a snowflake motif, all over pattern)
Mrs. Dalzill's Pattern (men's vest with an all over diamond and vine pattern)
Mrs. Garrick's Patterns (2 pullovers and 1 turtle neck, one with rows of snowflake motifs alternated by rows of peerie patterns, the other 2 with rows of a rose or flower motif alternated by rows of peerie patterns).

The Prince of Wales's Jersey Pattern (no picture provided of the finished sweater, only the classic painting). The charted design is surprisingly simple.

The vast majority of charted designs are simple, conducive to production knitting, and utility garments for family, however, there are a few with more complex designs for "Sunday best."
