parky on the beautiful game...,
By A Customer
This review is from: Michael Parkinson on Football (Hardcover)
I've been a parky fan for 25 years, ever since the hilarious escapades with Cassius Clay and that EMU. I've read many of his books and I've considered Parkinson on Golf to be his finest...at least til NOW! From start to finish this is a joy to read from articles that make you snigger to articles that make you cry, it's got it all!A must for for all Parky fans! It's a shame he doesn't do stand up!

This Book Should Be Renamed,
By
This review is from: Michael Parkinson on Football (Paperback)
This book should be renamed 'Michael Parkinson on Barnsley Football Club 1940 to 1960'. I was looking forward to a refreshing perspective from an interviewer who has met most of the 'big names' and a journalist with considerable experience. Instead I found myself reading the teary-eyed reminiscences of a man who dwells too much in the past. He takes pride in being able to name the entire cup team at several points in distant history. Perhaps someone should but its not exactly the stuff of mass appeal. Another frustration is that each chapter is a reprint of his earlier columns and therefore there is a lot of repetition. This is an excellent book for Barnsley fans of a certain age who cant watch a 21st century Premiership clash without lamenting 'It was all so much better in my day'.

Football as I remember it,
By
This review is from: Michael Parkinson on Football (Paperback)
This is a beautifully written book, delving into his formative days in the back yard league in Barnsley, through standing on the terraces at Oakwell, but then it could be any of our teams, to personalities that marked a highlight in the authors mind from 'Sir Alf' and before, up to recent day footballers in the premier league of the mid 1990's. A wonderful reflection into what was the magic of football for the author and certainly touches the areas of my memory. As always with Michael Parkinson that delicious brand of wit is always ready to surface, although I never saw a 'nebbing' in our league. If nostalgia floats your boat this book is for you.
