Reviews

In the autumn of 1988 Michael Palin set out from the Reform Club to circumnavigate the world, following the route taken by Phileas Fogg in the epic novel of 1873. His journey became a great 20th Century adventure and soon took its place as a classic TV series.

Using only the modes of transport available to Jules Verne’s hero, Michael Palin travels in a Venetian refuse barge, a battered taxi in Egypt, a primitive boat across the Persian Gulf, a Chinese steam engine and a container ship across the Date Line as his attempt to circumnavigate the world heralds a phenomenal journey of dhows, diarrhea, hungry parrots and a world full of surprises. 20 years later Michael Palin returned to the scene of one of the series most memorable sequences - when he sailed across the Persian Gulf from Dubai to Mumbai in a traditional dhow. Can he trace the men with whom he forged a special bond, and on whom his life depended twenty years ago?

I am genuinely surprised by the bad ratings. Although they seem to be having ago at Amazon's product description rather than the product itself.

So here's a description of the product:

In September 1988 Michael Palin left the Reform Club, London to follow the route that fictional, Phileas Fogg took 115 years earlier, to travel around the world in 80 days. Of course in 1988 that could be done in much less time, and even less today.
But Palin's task is to travel around the world, never leaving the surface (ie - no flying) following Fogg's route as closely as possible, and to make it back to the Reform Club 80 days later.

To mark 20 years since the trip (and to celebrate the 20 years of travelling the rest of the world in between) Palin decides to track down some people he met and befriended on the original voyage. Although not quite 80 days, he spends some time re-tracing steps and tracking these people down.

I think the latter trip on the back of the original is a good thing in my opinion (after all, the re-visit isn't THAT long, you want your moneys worth!) and I think the differences are amazing. In that gap of 20 years so much has happened. Places have changed names. Certain routes have developed and others become obsolete. Mobile phones have changed the way we communicate, GPS & Satellite navigation systems make it near impossible to get lost and the internet has pretty much revolutionised our lives.

I'd recommend this as Palin makes the journey humorous, exciting and manages to give us a taste of the countries he travels through. Just a reminder: you get both the original programme from 1988 and Palin's revisit from 2008. He doesn't do the journey again, he just tries to trace some people from the original journey.

I had the original Around the World in 80 days as part of a box set. I missed the 20 years on episode, so decided to buy this DVD which includes the "20 years on " episode where Michael went back to find the crew he met on the Dhow "Al Sharma". I still think this is one of the best documentary/travel series ever made and I never tire of watching it, especially the episode where he was on the dhow.

It was nice to catch up on the things that were covered in the original series. Didn't quite have the same wow factor but a good documentary nevertheless and well worth the purchase price.

If you remember the series first time around, then enjoy it again. Extra feature of return to people and places is interesting, albeit short.
