In order to fully understand the music its essential to understand it was from soundtracks to early films by Peter Greenaway (early on in his career when he was experimenting with structuralism:Greenaway - Early Films. Some pieces such as "Bird List Song" match exact moments in the films. Michael Nyman had already found his sound because although clearly influenced by Philip Glass there are moments of discordance (such as "Waltz" with brief contributions by Evan Parker and Peter Brotzmann) and a sense of humor that pervades the album (somewhat different from the didactic elements of some albums by other minimalist composers). Overall, a highly worthwhile listen and an album long overdue for reissue.
