5.0 out of 5 stars I wish I had more stars to rate it!, 6 Mar 2006
This review is from: Michael Flatley: Celtic Tiger [DVD] (DVD)
Thanks to the kindness of Mr. Flatley himself, me and 499 other fans, together with 500 kids who have Irish Dancing classes, were invited to the recording of this dvd. It took my breath away then and it still does, every time I watch it.
It's absolutely brilliant and Michael is dancing even better, if that is at all possible. The first half portrays episodes of Irish history and the second is about the Irish in America, since his own parents emigrated in 1947.
Yes, folks, he did it again: pure, undiluted, first class entertainment.

3.0 out of 5 stars Celtic Tiger, 4 May 2006

I cannot believe that I was actually a bit disappointed in this DVD Michael. I was completely blown away by Riverdance, Lord of the Dance and feet of Flames which all come across as Irish Dance and Music Shows. While the music in Celtic Tiger sounds very Irish throughout, the dancing drifts away quite often from that style. I was really looking for a show that celebrated Irish dance in Michael's usually exciting way...lots of synchronised routines! There was too much ballet and gymnastics for me and frankly NOT ENOUGH OF MICHAEL FLATLEY. I am however such a fan that when I saw the live show, I would have been happy to have just seen Michael walk on stage. He has such a presence about him and he is so wonderful to watch, that the Irish steps are an added bonus. I wonder what the next project will be.

3.0 out of 5 stars Celtic Tiger - Good but overshadowed by previous performances!!, 4 Aug 2006

"Celtic Tiger" is an excellent performance but I feel nothing compares to the first time we saw Flatley electrify us and astound us in "RiverDance". Then Irish dancing on a large scale was novel, new, exciting and fresh. I'm still amazed by the collective synchronicity and fast footwork that sets the stage alight but dare I say Irish dancing is losing its lustre and while there is a talent there is an element of hmmm we've seen this what's new??

Unfortunatly Flatley is a victim of his own success because after "Lord of the Dance" and "Feet of Flames" can he top it? The short answer is no, and to be honest "Celtic Tiger" isn't for everybody. Sometimes DVD on TV can capture the atmosphere and essence of the live stage show but it didn't translate as well here, however, I'd have loved to have seen the performance live and the general feel is there.
If you're not into dance then it's not recommended (I remember my dad muttering, "a load of ponces prancing around" as he went to make a cup of tea). Basically there is a lot of gymnastics and ballet dancing, which isn't to everyones taste. I have to say however, the backdrops are amazing and at times awe-inspiring. The story of Ireland is told effectively and especially the emigration of the Irish to America. There is a sense of I have seen all this before and also unfortunatly the main tenet of Irish dance is all below the waist and like pogo sticks the upper body bounces up and down. This done in a variety of different costumes and scenes becomes a little tedious.
Now all the negative aside - if you like Irish dance it's worth a peruse, if you're a fan of Flatley still get it - it is a dance extravaganza and some of the settings are breathtaking. Being English I wasn't offended by the redcoats pillaging of the Irish villages - it is part of our history whether we like it or not - no point pretending the bad parts didn't happen. The music is also gorgeous and some of the songs heart-warming. Overall - it is worth a watch but it would be nice to see something original and new - a little of been here done that syndrome is creeping in now. Also with this DVD I did have a sense of well I've seen it once I wouldn't bother again so it didn't have the same impact as "Riverdance" for me.
