I am a massive fan of James Newton Howard's work, but unfortunately this score completely failed to impress me. The majority of the tracks contain a light and rather drab rhythm with a lot of unobtrusive but highly uninteresting electronics that fails to turn into anything thematic or memorable. This album contains none of Howard's usual vibrant themes and orchestrations, with the orchestra only kicking in properly in the two of the final three tracks ("I'm not the guy you kill", and "25 Dollars Worth"). This was enough to push the rating up to 2*, but all the other tracks are 1* and totally forgettable. It was shocking that this score was oscar nominated when many of his previous works have gone unnoticed. Although it pains me to say it, there is nothing here of any interest for the casual listener or the fans of JNH's work. It might have worked well in the film (I haven't seen it), but it certainly doesn't on CD.
